Nice article , but I personally don't think that the mixers are the solution for the anonymity . Off-chain transaction are the solution if you ask me , waiting for ZeroCoin project , I hope they will finish it sometime soon => link removed It's very interessting

Coin mixing services are popular solution for laundering coin now, but it's just a matter of time before they get taken down. Bitcoin is on a path to legal use, and with regulations coming it's way, theres no place for such services anymore. But a decent article tho. How many coins offered more anonymity to users so far? By looking in their history, you can see the future in all others that are to come, it's just a pump and dump (or plain IPO and run) ; rinse and repeat, each any every time. cheers

mixers aren't necessary(and i don't trust them) you can use a proxy as a node instead, and play with the ramification process of addresses, or use anon altcoin or just mine your coin, there are multiple way..
there should be a option that let you choose from which address you want to send your coins...

There is no need to use a mixer for most bitcoiners. Just don't send all your bitcoin to 1 single address, keep funds spread out among lots of addresses and no one knows how much bitcoin you have. I obtain all my coins legally and I don't mind people tracing back my coins to an exchange, a gambling site or a faucet.
Satoshi envisioned bitcoin users to use an address only once. Receive, spend, send the change to a new address and never use that address again. If you follow this practice. There is enough anonymity.

I just said it sounds like advertisement, and not that it indeed is, you didn't had to remove the link because of what i said, i removed mine from your quote just because i dont want to share it. Hate toward shi*coins is what u develop over the years when you're hanging out here, you will see Satoshi envisioned bitcoin users to use an address only once. Yup, only the people will bad intentions are the one with true need to mix coins, hence i believe it will be stopped in soon future. Also, i dont see reason why i would need to use addresses only one time, except when i need to make certain transactions more easily seen. cheers

Most exchanges only use one address for withdrawals, but you deposit to a different personal address. An alternative to mixers is depositing and withdrawing through multiple exchanges in multiple jurisdictions. It's unlikely the Americans could force a Chinese exchange to give them details of transactions, and vice versa.

The exchange deposit and withdraw method is well known. It is a good alternative to mixers, except you never know when these exchanges might go down or delay withdraws and have your coins stuck inside ![Cheesy](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/cheesy.gif) Better to "clean" in small amounts using this method. You will loose more fees but expose to less risk.

Requiring you to verify your identity doesnt mean that they will be allowed to share that information with third party. That is, unless there is something illegal going on, and they use legal channels to request your ID information. But there will always be dice sites and such, where u can use the same deposit-insta-withdraw method. cheers

Send btc to exchange1 --> buy ltc --> send ltc to exchange 2 --> buy btc with ltc -)> btc cannot be traced.
Or am I missing something? Seems safer and cheaper than a mixer.

the owner of the exchange can still track you in any case, there is also the risk of losing some money in this process

You should ALWAYS use a mixing service!!
Also, you should torify your entire internet connection using TAILS ... simply running TOR in your browser is not enough. Especially if you are using ELECTRUM, you are better off using TAILS than a VPN, because a VPN is not 100% uncrackable!

Something like coin-join that mixes transactions offline before broadcasting. Not sure how mature it is as of now.

You beat me to this. Seems it took 17 posts in this thread for someone to bring coinjoin into the mix (pun intended). Some projects like joinmarket can be used today to mix your coins with no counterparty risk. And you could even earn some satoshis by acting as a market maker.

There is no need to use a mixer for most bitcoiners. Just don't send all your bitcoin to 1 single address, keep funds spread out among lots of addresses and no one knows how much bitcoin you have.
It is the number of wallets, not addresses, that is important. Without careful use of coin control, all the addresses in a wallet will be linked to each other. So if somebody knows one of the addresses in your wallet, they can know them all (with some limitations).
