"The Bitcoin community was rocked to its knees today after Bitcoin chief scientist, Gavin Bell (aka Gavin Andresen), announced to the world that if his hand is forced, he’ll override the core developers of bitcoin and become the self-appointed “coding king” of the popular black market cryptocurrency."

Even though he has the alert key, Gavin can't change the code unless the other core devs  let him. Due to the open source nature of Bitcoin and the way that git works, if he forces any changes to the source, the other devs can rollback the changes. If he forked bitcoin, he would  need to get enough people to switch, and that would not happen if he tried to forcibly take over with the alert key somehow.

This article is just the typical FUD against bitcoin.

Why would the other core developers be against larger blocks?  It's obvious we need them.

I post for interest - not signature spam.

If you'll read the post Gavin made today, you'll see how he explains his intention to override the other core developers, and his strategy for accomplishing that goal.

Is that possible? How about community power? Essentially if everybody who is running a node goes against the idea, somehow can the update actually took place and proceed in the first place? Anyway, when I scroll down further to read the article, one thing that caught my attention is this. Any comment? I have my own reserved thought.

Fortunately, there are hundreds of other cryptocurrencies to choose from that are more stable and more transparent. Coinmarketcap.com shows the gap slowly narrowing between the digital currency leader Bitcoin and the remaining Altcoin pack.

If the large mining pools are behind him, there is nothing we can do about it..

Bad move imo, not a way to make yourself popular..

If Gavin can convince 51% miners to change, then it will change.

What are the repercussions of the situation whereby some people are using Bitcoin Core and some people are using Bitcoin-XT? For example if opinion is divided...

Surely in having one or two developers attempting to divide the network, it is going to be detriment to the project eventually. For right or wrong, matters less.

what all the fuss about? even if he is just forcing them to do an update, we are talking about a mandatory update basically, it must be done you can't go around it

it's like he need consensus for fixing a bug...

We’re told repeatedly, that if we don’t like the changes to the code, we’re free not to update our wallets. But non-technical users don’t understand that by refusing to update they’ll be left behind on the old fork and unable to send or receive coins. The fact is users must update if they want a functioning bitcoin wallet.
Change the code???

faucet used to be profitable

Lol. Are you going to take something written on a site called altcoinpress seriously?

http://coinmarketcap.com/

Take a look yourself. No coins come close and wouldn't even if the block resizing goes ahead or not.
