Buying S5 from Bitmain Batch

Hi

I'm new to the world of bit mining hardware, and want a relatively decent miner for hobby.

Looking at geting ths Antminer S3 or S5.

If I buy from the Bitmain "Antminer S5 Batch 5", do I like wait until they meet a sell count threshold, or do they ship next business day?

Im skeptical about the S5 because I live in a room share in california where its warm in the summers, and apparently the S5 is NOISY. Is there a fan i can buy at frys to make this thing a whole lot less noisy (I think I could deal with heat generated)?


The alternative is buying an Antminer S3 on Ebay. Significantly less GH/s but im okay with this, as it will primarily be for hobby. And it doesn't seem to have the same noise issues as the S5? Insights are welcome

S3 for a hobby if you want it quiet , unless you want to mod the S5 to be quiet but if your not to worried about ROI or anything at all  S 3 for fun and hobby . S3 are very quiet and much cooler then the S5 but if its hobby you can buy two water blocks http://shop.syscooling.com/goods.php?id=47 and then build a water  cooling kit off ebay cheap.

S5's fan is noisy. You can find some fans that might cool your S5 with less noise. At stock clock, S5 generates considerable amount of heat and requires a lot of airflow to dissipate it. A lot of airflow = a lot of noise. I've read about some people underclocking their S5 to have it's fan working at lower RPM.

How would you deal with generated heat? AntMiner S5 is pretty much like a 500+W electric heater.

i would say for really quiet you need two fans doing at least  CFM 131 each at stack speeds in push pull and if heat won't mater then get two really quiet fans and the S5 .

set the freq to 206 or 212    vs 218 or 225

it will hash at 420gh and be quiet it will pull 310 watts  not crazy hot.

do what I do split the hash. into 3 pools

I do ⅔  at btcguild which earn steady coin

I do ⅓  at solo.ckpool.org   which is all or nothing.  meaning a 25 coin block or 0

No experience with the S5s, so I can't speak to them, but I have some S3s available if you're interested.  Fairly quiet.  Can likely beat eBay pricing too.  And I have platinum server PSUs available if you need a power supply, too.

How quiet are the platinum server PSU's? While I know they are reliable and efficient, I have this impression that they are usually quite noisy with the little whiny 40mm fans. I ask only because it would be a shame to get a relatively quiet miner coupled to a noisy PSU.

Maybe my impressions of a server PSU are just obsolete?

im using hp dps-800 server supplies.   normally they run super loud but you can tell the ps to run the fan at low speed which is very quiet.  they havent failed yet after several months of running 2 s3's each.

If your wanting a quiet PSU I might suggest looking at the RM series.  Depending on model and load it adjusts fan speed.

I have had good luck with RM1000's but for 1 S3 would be a little overkill.

Depends on the load and ambient temp.  Once you get them above 7-800w or so they can get loud(especially if the ambient temp is high), but at lower loads they're actually surprisingly quiet(more so than I expected, honestly).  I run them at 73-77F intake temp.

Depends on the load.  Once you get them above 7-800w or so they can get loud, but at lower loads they're actually surprisingly quiet(more so than I expected, honestly).

personally if you find a deal on the evga 1300 g2

it runs 1200 watts with not much problem. that is 3 s-3's or 2 s-5's at standard clocks.

Sure S5 is your choice.

To reduce the noise you can buy 2 less noisy fans. Many of people here prefer Delta fans, but you are not limited here with this vendor; you can compare a characteristics of Delta fans here to start - look for fans like AFB1212HHE-TP02, AFB1212VHEX01 (a little more noisy).

Also do not forget that S5 cooling probably need to be modified. New S5s sometimes content little radiators from "external" side of PCB, where the little copper plates are placed. These are the right place for BM1384 chips to dissipate heat from.



The plates marked with little red circles (the picture is not mine) are without radiators.

With such little radiators the hashing blade became cooler, so the controller reduces fan's speed, which lead to noise reduction. You are free choosing the radiators, but their base dimension should no exceed the dimension of that copper plate. For the safety reason.

It's a picture of S5 shipped by Bitmain (Sic!). I was expected my S5 will arrive with such radiators too...

You'll get it in 2 weeks utter utter tops.  I have orded 3 times from them all with in a week, the batch is just like the batch they made.  THey don't wait until x amount are ordered, you order 1 S5 you get one ASAP.

I would highly recommend using Kijiji for an S3 or Bitmain for an S5.

I am running two S3's both have been running straight for over a year .  I also have an S1 that has been running full blast for about 1.5 years. 

I think you'll make an ROI if you buy an S5.

And the key word above is 'GLUE'. Do not just use sticky thermal tape. From past experience using it on my retired s1's I can tell ya after a month or so the heatsinks start sliding towards the center of the earth... Fortunately I caught that before things started shorting out!

Always use a thermal epoxy so they stay put. Just a small dollop per sink is all that is needed. Also conducts heat better than thermal tape.
