It depends, you will be surprised how many girls are curious about technology and topics like bitcoin. I met girl who studied economy and I mentioned bitcoin.
She was genuinely interested and we talked for couple minutes about this topic. I guess bitcoin is fine as topic when you find a girl who is not airhead bimbo not interested in anything but fashion.

My wife thinks it's super nerdy and after explaining it she still says "I don't get why anyone would use it". She is thoroughly annoyed by bitcoin because I'm usually doing something BTC related everyday. It's extremely likely that mentioning Bitcoin on your first date would get you dumped faster than someone who talked about diesel engines on his first date. you are quite right. there have been topics similar to this in the past, where basement dwelling virgins think that it impresses girls.
its best to meander around the subject by saying your an investor (or your example) mechanic. rather then talking about decentralization (or in your case) the best mix of fuel and airflow of the engine.

I did mention it to my wife, she is tech savvy so she should understand how it works, but had a hard time to explain it to her. She thinks the time I spend on bitcoin is futile, makes fun of me trying to earn some coins while she swipes away the candy on her phone. I would still mention it if it were our first date though
