Today, I saw a message in my bitcoin wallet telling me I had to update
I was trying to open my bitcoin wallet today, but there was a message at the top of the wallet
that told me that I 'must update to a different version' or something like that,
and the wallet wouldn't synch.
I was very surprised. In all the time I have been using the bitcoin wallet,
there hasn't ever been any need to update to a different version yet.
I closed the bitcoin wallet, wondering about that message I had seen.
I then thought there would be a big announcement somewhere on the bitcointalk forum to tell everyone that they had to update to a new version, but I looked and couldn't find any announcement at all on bitcointalk
I then thought that it must be that I was hacked somehow, that somehow someone put that message there by hacking my wallet.
So, I open up my bitcoin wallet, and it synched quickly and the message wasn't there anymore. Whatever it was, the message telling me to update wasn't there anymore.
Anyone know what this message was? Should I be worried about it being a hack? Are my bitcoins safe in my wallet now that I think I have been hacked and seen that message?

What wallet are you using? Sometimes developers of alternate clients will find a major issue in their software and issue an update.

People seem to think it has to do with the wallet version or OS? That is private information I think.
It must have been some kind of hack trick to put that message into my wallet like that.
The last time someone played tricks in my bitcoin wallet was when I was on the site named mtgox.com and someone tried to trick me to send my bitcoins to some address, it was a strange trick they were trying, I suspected an inside job from mtgox workers.
it seems that the wallet isn't as secure as one might hope.(or do you think it was something I did, but the wallet is fine and blameless?)
but I have been told that as long as they do not have the password to send bitcoins then they cannot get the bitcoins.

People know it has to do with the wallet version. If your wallet is telling you to update, it's because it thinks it's an obsolete version. Nobody can tell you why it thinks that without knowing what version it actually is. That much ought to be obvious if you're asking for help. That is private information I think.
It isn't. Your wallet broadcasts its version to other nodes it is connected to. It must have been some kind of hack trick to put that message into my wallet like that.
That is one possibility. Another possibility is that your wallet really is out of date and incompatible with other nodes. We cannot say which is the case without knowing what version you're using. The last time someone played tricks in my bitcoin wallet was when I was on the site named mtgox.com and someone tried to trick me to send my bitcoins to some address, it was a strange trick they were trying, I suspected an inside job from mtgox workers.
The Mt. Gox debacle is ancient history. If you haven't upgraded your wallet since then, it is certainly out of date. If you insist on not providing sufficient information to solve your problem, go to the website of your wallet software and find out what the current version is. If it is different from the version you have, try upgrading and see if that solves the problem. Otherwise we cannot help you.

Of course it has to do with the wallet you are using and the OS. If you are running Windows 7 you are much more likely to have a virus and a "hack trick" than Windows 10 beta, Ubuntu 14 or OS X. It is just reality. If you are running Bitcoin 0.3.21 or some other wallet you are likely out of date. etc. Without any of that information, don't expect anyone to be able to help you here since there would be too many variables to have any hope of doing anything except guessing.

I have noticed on the internet, if there is any problems at all, people will tend to try and lay the blame on your end of things, when in fact it is likely a problem with the bitcoin wallet, and nothing to do with anything I have at all. Therefore, there is no point at all in even asking me for any private information, and I believe that you are wrong. Don't worry, be happy

Well, if we don't know what wallet you are using, then we can't help you. Just knowing that you are using a Bitcoin wallet out of several does not help at all. Sure the problem may be with the wallet, but without knowing what it is, nothing can be done by anyone else to help you.

Sure the problem may be with the wallet, but without knowing what it is, nothing can be done by anyone else to help you. I already said that my bitcoin wallet is working fine. I shut it down, and restarted it and it synched and the message was gone. I think the message was likely a hack attempt, I may have gone to the wrong website, or somehow someone managed to force that message into my bitcoin wallet. What reason(s) would someone have for doing that? I do not know for sure, but there are suspicions that it was a hack attempt from someone who wants me to download their wallet instead of the current wallet I am using. There, so there isn't any reason to ask me private information, because I already have decided what I think it is, and my wallet is working fine again, so likely whatever it was, is gone now. I just need to be more careful on the internet to try and avoid those hack attempts. I strongly suspect it was a cross-site scrypting hack of some sort. Therefore, the answer is most likely, that I need to avoid having two or more websites/urls opened at the same time. But the real problem was someone doing cross site scrypting hack attempt and they obviously sent me a message to tell me to update my wallet, therefore they are likely involved with one of the various bitcoin wallet variations. Once again, don't worry, be happy, even if/when you are wrong

I don't think that cross-site scripting is possible between two programs (they aren't sites) unless you are using an online wallet, but that does not seem to be the case. The browser does not have access to that kind of information to make such an attack possible. It is possible that the wallet glitched, you have malware, or someone managed to spoof an alert from the developer. You should probably scan your computer for malware just to be safe, and contact the developer of your wallet just to check whether that message was legit.

By the wording, it seems the OP is using an online wallet ("avoid having two or more websites opened at the same time") and got some sort of pop-up/layer message with a link to "update wallet".

well, what ppl are asking you here is because that info is needed if you want to be helped from them.
i understand you, that you dont want to give all those info, but you need to understand that they need that info too.
if you care a lot about it, maybe you can try to contact with some mods or something like that by PM, but im pretty sure that they are not here to reply to that questions by pm, they will point you to ask the same here.
