According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)

I'm still fairly new to the message board here, but I've been a proud owner of a few Bitcoins for a while.   Please let me know if y'all have an Austin meetup.  I would love to meet more local enthusiasts.

I do have a tiny little side business where I buy and sell gold.  Whenever I get nice items in, I offer them for sale in exchange for Bitcoin.  If you do have something at SXSW, I would love to put a plug in for my little operation also.

Thanks,

James

Of course, the day after I leave Austin...

I'm in Austin.

Me? I'm just the cynical voice floating in the sea of unchecked optimism.

I don't think it's required, but RSVPing on the meetup page would be a big help - both for getting the space setup for the likely number of attendees and in promoting the meetup.  (I'm not the organizer - just an instigator who would like to see some more bitcoin activity locally)

wow, this is awesome

Did y'all notice that Austin has more people who have joined the meetup than for other US cities?  Maybe others are using a different venue to organize, but I'm still impressed with my town.  Austinites are with it!

I think about 12 people showed up.  As you would expect from a bitcoin meetup, there was a very diverse mix of opinions and viewpoints in attendance.  It seems to have been a good launching point for some side projects, and I think there will likely be more general meetups too.

I'm not familiar with that group.  It's possible there is overlap, but it's not the same group.

It was a smaller, more technical meetup.  There was a lot of discussion of some possible bitcoin projects/businesses, and a couple of us worked on some code to call various exchange APIs to get current BTC/LTC pricing to embed in web sites.
