Altcoins have matured beyond bitcoin protocols, forks, and clones. The term Altcoin I feel discredits current currencies like NXT, Cryptonote Tech., NEM, etc.
New currencies and 2.0 platforms no longer use the traditional 'x'coin naming scheme and no longer share bitcoin code. Should the diversity and emerging Altcoin technologies be considered more than an "Altcoin?"

Actually i feel the same way, i don't like the term altcoin, like it's just an altcoin anyway so no way its better than bitcoin. A coin that is the same as bitcoin should be called altcoin but those who are different and have innovative features shouldn't be called altcoin imo.

Yes, because they are a digital currency. You can stop calling them altcoins if you wish though and just call them cryptocurrencies instead. Maybe altcoin will go out of fashion eventually but you can't really force people to change but you can lead by example.

The term alt coin has been used for so long it's like a household name now. Trying to get people to call them a new name is like trying to stop people calling vacuum cleaners hoovers.

No, they can't be a Digital Currencies.I think they more like a platform.
Only bitcoin have the chance to be a Currencies.
All the pos coin can't be Currencies as they are unfair.

I think the bolded statement is flawed in that Bitcoin can't scale to a major currency (maybe someday?), isn't as fungible as most currencies, and lacks the privacy of most physical coins and cash. It will remain more of an asset class than a currency if nothing drastic happens to its architecture.

the thing is, they are alternative cryptocurrencies. so i think altcoin term is suitable for them.

and this is not going to change until we stop seeing new coins everyday that are scam/pump & dump/copy

Altcoins are not mature enough to be a separate thing, it needs a new feature that is actually useful and most importantly people have to accept it as a currency then it can be considered as a stand alone and be called coin not altcoin!

Altcoins are both cryptocurrencies, digital currencies, magic internet moniez and altcoins. But altcoin is the most obvious name to describe them because they are alternative to the big brother that is bitcoin. As long as altcoins will have to be traded to FIAT through bitcoin, they will remain altcoins for sure.

Plus, it makes sense as long as all of them are living under the shadow of the Big BTC

There was a similar thread above, but he was arguing they shouldn't be called alt coins. I disagree as I think they are alt coins, but I don't see it as a negative but for it to be a positive they really need to offer something exceptional.

you all act like they are digital stocks actually, trying to pretend what ever applies to the traditional US stock exchange etc applies to "ALT's"

a currency not adopted by the masses is simply useless garbage for one thing and not one Alt coin is "adopted"
Bitcoin itself was starting to back when it hit over $1,000 a coin but look around now..

things went down hill with the premine/ipo/ico bullshit.
and.. when YOU all started buying into it (thinking you could make money off it all)
so you all ruined the scene and now you pay the price.
no respectable business people on earth are going to touch this digital Ponzi scheme crap that is for sure, especially watching Doge coin come out
and then the surge that resulted (copy cats launched in full force)

people got stupid and greedy and thought the crowd would keep coming way back and I called it LOUDLY back then..
new users seen what was happening and said.. nope.. screw that crap !

you all missed the point loooong ago.. I got involved because it was new and innovative and honest
and..
I could mine coins with hardware !
take away the mining/Proof of work system and replace it with jerk off's Premining coins for an IPO and this is what you all get.
why would someone want to come into this retarded crap and have to go to the bank to buy altcoins with the US or Canadian dollar etc ?
the mining aspect was a major driving force and also helped as a gateway for users to get involved (who didn't have a ton of extra cash)

Berni Madoff would be proud and hell maybe he has already made a few coins here and we don't know it hahhahah

These aren't stocks guys.. they are ALL failed currencies not adopted by the public.
Bitcoin is teetering on failure too.. hmm wonder why ?
Just imagine what Bitcoin would be like if all these so called "Dev's" of Alt coins invested their time coding for Bitcoin instead.
I wonder why they would want to start their own coin and premine 8 billion of them and sell them to you for *bitcoin ? LOL  Roll Eyes

You can't call it digital currency if you can't spend it, and most Altcoins can't be spent. Some (like NXT) are platforms, so they have some use, but the rest are useless. That's why the price of all these coins keep going down.

A Blockchain is only about proving data is there and in it's original form, the method allows proving of sums and balances. Because the method allows of recording data it makes it a suitable use as a currency, it does not however make it an Altcoin as a digital currency, it's just referred to as such by popular use.

ohh and.. "discredits" OP ? really ?

Do you know how many times I have pointed out to you all that you are demanding credibility
for your *new coin etc.
while..
You post it / ANN it here at Bitcointalk !
Right along side 6 or 7,000 other clone coins.
Placing your *project directly besides scams and other assorted bullshit on a site with virtually no rules.. is ohhhh so classy guys.
Think about it.. that sleaziest scummiest nasty shit has gone down here from the worst pieces of shit on earth
and you guys walk in here and post your coin as coin number #7,345 and then say "mine is different"
you kids fail at comprehending Context.. your blind or dishonest.
How could any self respecting Company and yeah I say company because these guys ask for a Million dollars with IPO's and use white papers etc
and prance around trying to be big business with suits and ties.. while the location of their operation is a place notorious
for masked anonymous hackers and thieves that make 100's of accounts (and brag about it publicly) on a forum where scamming is NOT against the rules.
Like seriously, give your fucking god damn heads a shake for fuck sakes !
Why the fuck would I come here knowing legit accounts are bought and sold and there is no rules or repercussions for thieves and scammers
and think NXT (or what ever) is legit and different ?
Wouldn't a legit operation steer clear of all this idiotic scammy moronic bullshit ?

Argue with me all you want the user base is gone and the large activity that *use to exist is long gone too.. I told you so guys !
You can say things are fine but I warned you all long ago this scene would dry up and die hard.. and it has look around.
Reality speaks loud and clear.. too bad many refuse to "get it"
and why ? because they are dumb or dishonest.. as I have said prob 100 times here last few years (nothing changes)
