Closing bitcoin?

When I boot my PC bitcoin starts which is fair enough. Whenever I rightclick on it's icon in the tray, hit "Exit" the icon disappears. However if I open "Processes" in task manager it is still running, and Resource Monitor shows it's doing some disk operations.

I relaunch bitcoin, right click on the tray and hit "Exit", and now it does exit.
What is the cause of this? Are there any operations bitcoin has to perform on start? Or is this a bug somehow?

If you click exit in the GUI window of Bitcoin, it won't actually "exit", it'll just minimize to the systray.

As you've correctly observed, clicking exit from the systray, completely quits the program.

This is just a feature for allowing to easily hide Bitcoin in the systray, as to leave it operating silently in the background.

Bitcoin demands so few resources from your computer, that you might aswell leave it running in the systray whenever your machine is turned on. That way it can see new blocks and update your wallet data accordingly.

No it is not a feature. When you go File->Exit in GUI it will exit leaving no process running behind. It may take few seconds
What is a feature is when you click X in the right top corner of GUI, it minimizes it to system tray

Notice how I use rightclick on the tray icon and press Exit

What I'm wondering is, why the process runs 1 - 2 minutes after exiting it via the app.

If you're exiting it immediately after starting it, it's probably still busy reading the block chain of the disk (it's ~300 MB). After you're done it once, your OS probably has the block chain files cached in memory, so it doesn't take as long.
