Signing a message ?

Again , when we try to sign a message with our Bitcoin adresses .. Logically the wallet (dosen't matter which one really .; Electrum,Multibit , Bitcoin Core or Armory) asks you to put a Bitcoin addy , I'm wondering how that prooves that you own the adress ?

I never tried to put an adress that it's not mine but I'am really curious , when I put an adress , does the wallet check if I own the adresses on my receiving adresses or what exactly ?  because it wouldn't make sense if you can put any adress randomly . or im missing something like everytime :x

Of course it won't work if you enter an address you don't own. In order to sign a message you need to have the private key of that address. Therefore you need to have that address in your wallet and you need to have the password to unlock the wallet (if it is encrypted).

If you enter an address you don't own all you'll get is an error message. You should have tried before posting.

Indeed , It asked me for password to unlock the wallet .
I know I had to try it before posting but I was too afraid to do that , because of the time I screw things up . thanks for your help
