We have heard of the opinion of many bitcoin celebrities. Would like to know what the man behind DarkWallet thinks about it. Especially because I heard DarkWallet is going to be a client written from scratch...

Does it matter if it works under 1MB or 20MB in terms of DarkWallet's anonymity effectiveness? I've tried searching for Taaki's quote on this but there is nothing it seems.

Not sure if that affects DarkWallet's design of anonymity. genjix was last seen on this forum on February 08, 2015. He probably does not use any twitter account either.

Latest modifications on there have been from months ago too. Is it safe to assume Darkwallet is abandoned at this point? It sucks because Bitcoin's anonymity needs a lot of work.

I think they'll start working on it again eventually. They are drifting about. Sleeping on couches. Doing multiple projects.

I think that the team behind this project went awol with the money from crowdfunding. Some interesting discussion took place on Reddit's /r/bitcoin.

Those accusing Amir and others working on Darkwallet with running off with the money don't understand how frugal they live. These developers are literally squatting abandoned houses to save money and their only vice is 300 Euros a month for some herbs.

Darkwallet has been dramatically underfunded and under supported from day one and all the contributions thus far are a drop in the bucket to the value of code produced.

Amir appears to be alive and well and more code being done in secret off github from the indication of these two posts :

https://twitter.com/TheDarkwallet/status/601550125668806656
https://lists.dyne.org/lurker/message/20150505.125747.df78f1c6.en.html

This project needs more assistance :

https://wiki.unsystem.net/en/index.php/DarkWallet/Project_multisig_fund

The funds are dangerously low at only 28 BTC which is absolutely nothing to keep the project active.

I understand that the project is underfunded. But, is Amir really cash strapped himself ? Why does he need to use abandoned houses to save money ?

Amir Taaki was on Forbes for 30 under 30...

Also, he was featured as next bilionaire in The Independent...

What fortune?

But, is Amir really cash strapped himself ? Why does he need to use abandoned houses to save money ?

It is clear to anyone who has spent time with Amir, that he is ideologically driven with little care for creature comforts or becoming rich and wealthy. He has made clear choices in his life to endanger himself and his future business prospects to pursue anarchist principles, decentralization , and privacy.

Those early articles recognized his talent and potential future prospects but didn't consider Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

Under what standards is darkwallet underfunded? The standard of 150$/hr programmers for hire in the USA? For an open source project, I feel like it has receive a decent amount of funding. And I'm not saying that asking for donations is bad, the opposite actually. But I could name several decent projects that have received less funding than darkwallet did.

Seriously? Amir had budgeted himself at less than 2.5 Euros an hour. Dark wallet and libbitcoin represents a very complicated and ambitious project which represents a completely rewritten set of implementations and tools to interact with the blockchain.

https://wiki.unsystem.net/en/index.php/DarkWallet/Expenses

Building good security and privacy is a very difficult to do correctly. If anyone doesn't feel like funding developers with bitcoin for the cheapest rates anywhere than there are many ways to help that don't involve giving over money -

Correct... but it also represents one of the more important projects for bitcoin. Even developers like Gavin stress the need for at least 3 full implementations or stacks for security and decentralization to make bitcoin a healthy ecosystem. Libbitcoin represents the second fully independent stack besides Bitcoin Core, bitcoinj and btcd. All other implementations represent partial stacks. Since Darkwallet depends upon Libbitcoin those two projects are intrinsically tied together.

I was just taken back by your suggestion that darkwallet developers were paying themselves 150 dollars an hour when they technically are taking a salary in food and many are homeless.

Libbitcoin is perhaps the most important alternative implementation as it represents work done by those who are more privacy conscientious.

Darkwallet/Libbitcoin needs a good million dollars in fundraising like open bazaar which is unlikely based upon the politics espoused by the developers.  The irony is that most the openbazaar devs hold the same views philosophically but have chosen to be less vocal and political. What is up for debate is the effectiveness of being bold, honest, and direct when it comes to completing a project but I see value in both approaches personally.

Unfortunately OpenBazaar is not as promising as DarkWallet, but they marketed it well. I think many people will enjoy direct financial benefit from OpenBazaar, which is not the case for DarkWallet. Hence it could not stir as much as OpenBazaar did.

I'd be surprised. Often the earliest adopters spent the hardest along the way to get things going. He also ran Intersango and maybe he was selling his own coins through there.

His lifestyle doesn't scream secret super stash but you never know.

Amir Taaki also looks like a pretty generous, sharing-is-caring, squatting anarchist type. Highly doubt he has many BTC left. I haven't heard of him investing in any bitcoin companies the way Ver and Voorhees have.
