With PoW, you have to use hardware and more electricity to earn coins. With PoS, you have to use the existing coin to earn more coins.

Proof of work means the network is secured by hashing (miners mining) Pos Means the transactions are secured through nodes minting (wallets running 24/7 verifying transactions). POS coins are less popular usually but they are fun to play with.
