Without the supporting infrastruture they have no product. Unless they're going to give these things away, the network will never get of the ground.

I plan to buy one. If it succeeds, it will be really successful. The hardware form factor is awesome, the possibilities are endless. I hope they make the hardware platform open!

However I think the project has a high risk of failure because it might be too technically ambitious, especially features such as the distributed network of cards relaying packets (power consumption, software complexity, etc), and some technical choices are dubious (solar panel while the card will be in a wallet/pocket 95% of the time.)

ya that's true the, solar panel i could do without. i hope that's not the only way of recharging this thing -_-

if they can make it work mostly as advertized it would be cool.

i think the movement tracking is BS, and will not be implement on the cards. users would have to to put in a gr8 deal of work for this to become a reality.

POS .. well anyone that want to accept bitcoin would have one of those cards then i can easily use my card to send the bitcoins and pay for wtv.

Imagine you walk into a store go to the cash with a bag of chips and select request total, the dude scans your chips, your card pops up 0.0012837 BTC total you click PAY!

what is going to go wrong:

the mesh network
it is not going to work out, neither in speed, power consumption or protocol.
Mesh networks are very hard to handle.

other technologies
they will be way more successful e.g. Bitinstants Debit Card, they only have to combine it with NFC and maybe some ATM support

costs
you will be eventually better off with a cheap (80Euro) Android phone that offers access to all web services or BitcoinApps than with a ~40 Euro Bitcoin Card (price is just an estimate for display + processor + wireless module + battery + case + assembly + shipping)

this point might actually work out ... or not. depends on how good the programmers actually are. Problems are the speed of the network (400mb of transactions per month), just calculating/checking one transaction takes about 3sec on such a device. At the time of posting there are 25820 transactions per day ... that will take the device 21 hours to just check them. as soon as you stop checking them for yourself, the device needs a trusted third party to do the checking etc

How about the confirmation time?

you would just accept the transaction as soon as you see it in the P2P network (meaning instantly), or wait until a trusted party has accepted the transaction. you wouldn't wait for confirmations in the blockchain for transactions that are lower then the reward for a block.

Conclusion:
I will definitely buy that device if they ever manage to produce it

the phone cost money, the service cost money monthly too ( a lot more money then the stupid phone -_- ).

that's what i like about bitcion card, its a one time cost, after that you can use the network for free. free texting, for real!  :
