Searching for interesting numbers in the blockchain

[scintill]

I added a "palindromes" callback to znort987's blockchain parser and searched for binary, hex, and decimal palindromes in block hashes, merkle roots, timestamps, nonces, transaction IDs, and pubkey hashes.  Here are the results:

I published my code as a fork of blockparser at https://github.com/scintill/blockparser.  I was kind of disappointed to not find more interesting palindromes, but there are some more places I could look.  The addresses 1111111111111111111114oLvT2 and 1QLbz7JHiBTspS962RLKV8GndWFwi5j6Qr are pubkey hashes 0 and (2^160)-1 respectively.

I don't know how to measure how close that fits.  The 5's may be high because of block reward, which I've left in.  Transaction fees were counted as part of the block reward.  It would probably be best to ignore the block reward, and break out transaction fees individually.  I will do that later.  Also, not sure why 1's would be high -- maybe people sending around a Satoshi for kicks?

Can you give us some addresses which contain sequential digits of pi or e or sqrt 2? 

The addresses 1111111111111111111114oLvT2 and 1QLbz7JHiBTspS962RLKV8GndWFwi5j6Qr are pubkey hashes 0 and (2^160)-1 respectively.

These are junk addresses right?  No privkey possible?  It might also be interesting to know how many coins are at such truly unreachable addresses.

Nice idea!  There's a lot.  Doing the bignum calculations to search hashes may have been overkill, but I did find some stuff in there.  I've edited the OP to include my findings.

It just occurred to me that sending special values like this could decrease anonymity. When a person sees them, it's unlikely that the destination address is a change address, meaning in a typical two-output transaction one can tell which output belongs to the sender.

Yeah, maybe look for unlikely patterns in address hashes, like 0xa9a9a9a9a9... or something. Interesting.

I think they are possible and valid addresses, but the likelihood of someone having a random private key whose EC pair's RIPEMD160 hash was 0 or 2^160-1, is so low that they are probably fake.

Ha, that was my next idea, too!  That should be the easiest of all, except that certain things might need to be excluded (like fixed block rewards) -- does that make sense?

Yeah you could take out the fixed rewards but by now that's a pretty small fraction of all outputs, so it might be only a slight bump above the Benford's distribution for 1st significant digit of 5. 

I guess you could make a histogram of first sig. fig. for all outputs, all inputs, miner fees, or maybe some other combination.  The various hashes and nonces should give a normal distribution and not Benford's.  Change transactions as well as mixing service transactions might also change the output distribution.
