looking to try mining for fun and cheap - what are my options?

Hi guys,

I like the idea of crypto currency and thought it would be fun to try mining. I have been reading up on the more popular currencies, I.e BTC and litecoin. It seems mining for profit is pointless unless large scale and using specialised hardware, I would like to see at least some cents worth.
I have Mini itx size pc if any random coins still use gpu mining, otherwise I thought perhaps a Raspberry and usb miner like Antminer U3 etc.
Is there any coins that are not too difficult to mine and is not totally volatile? As stated I'm not looking to make profits, just experience budget mining and see something in a wallet and I would like it keep is small and quiet like a raspberry project etc.

I haven't done physical mining for over 1 year now, due to the fact that I don't think ANY coin will be that profitable (unless you go for altcoin startups that go big).

Mini ITX PCs tend to have worst airflow due to their size. It isn't recommended to do any mining in them since the temperature is quite high. The potential of decreasing the lifespan of your PC is high. Antminer U3 mines on SHA256D cryptocurrencies. There aren't many of them and for most of them, there would be lots of competition already. If you want to try, try out Unobtanium [from http://coinchoose.com/], they have pretty good profitability and isn't too hard to mine.

Some reputable sites like the long lasting cex.io and the newly emerged bit-x.com allows bitcoin cloud mining from 0.0001 BTC. I had used cex.io for fun when the difficulty was 1/3 of now, and the price was about 5x of now. So mining now is more profitable than before, however the ROI time is still long, like about 1 year. Also by the increasing difficulty you may never get a ROI. Better choose a site that allows you to resell you hashing so you can stop any loss/take the profit anytime you want.

GPU mining is still very much alive... not very well however.
To mine on the cheap, nothing beats GPUs, especially if you already have a decent one in your processor!
Try multi-algo coins. Install wallet once, play with multiple algos. MyriadCoin is currently quite low diff, odds are you might hit a few blocks even without joining a pool (not that I suggest to solo-mine). Digibyte is also multi-algo now but diff is high.

If you want to get started mining for cheap just to learn the ropes, get a USB SHA256 miner.   They won't make you much money, but it will show you the basics and how to mine on a pool.  You can get any of the bitmaintech usb miners for pretty cheap on ebay.

Not the same though is it? Like comparing virtual sex to real sex. And most cloud mining companies are just investment scams with no real mining taking place, so you'd be better off investing your money elsewhere.

You can find them for less than $20 on eBay. In any case you should totally try mining, it's extremely fun if you're new to crypto, I still remember how exciting it was to unbox and set up my first miner which was a Fury 1.3 mh/s

Cloudmining is just handing your money to companies who promise that they are "mining" on real hardwares and promising real returns. Hardware mining is much more profitable than cloudmining, believe or not. Cloudmining incurs more expenses than self owned mining since maintenance fees are high and electrical fees only take a small part of the entire fees. Cloudmining also have more risk.

Oh sure, you're not gonna be able to make any money with the Gridseed but if I understand correctly op just wants to experience the joy of mining and is not necessarily looking to profit from it. There's no sense in getting a $50-$100 miner because it's still not gonna profitable. The Gridseed is ideal because it's cheap, uses very little power and allows you to have fun mining both SHA and scrypt coins.

you are not wrong it was suspended as the price went down to nearly $300 because they said the maintenance fees are going to be higher that what you can earn. and it still is not changed so far.
i think i read somewhere in the chat that if you still buy massive GHS there it can be profitable. but i am not sure. i only did small GHS trades there which was profitable back in the days.

Sorry I don't know that because I've left cex.io months ago and when I back to my account, the GHS price is just 30% of that at other mining sites (like bit-x and others). Today when I login I found my dust balance of 14 satoshis there and they don't let me buy any GHS because the amount is too small

Thank you for the replies! Cloud mining is not an option as my motivation is the joy from building something and seeing it work. If I was going to invest I would probably buy Litecoin for the hell off it.

I have been googling hardware and the Gridseed 5 chip usb miners seem logical and have been used with a pi. I was hoping to buy a couple however there doesn't appear to be much on ebay in Australia. I think because of our electricity prices, currently 37c/kw and the warm environment, mining has not been popular and inturn limited 2nd equipment.
I have a holiday in Germany soon so perhaps its easier to buy there.

I think only cloudmining is the best way to go at the moment.
