I’m alerting you today about a potential new policy that could impact your personal privacy online.

GoDaddy knows that as someone who uses our Domains By Proxy privacy service, you value protecting your personal contact information online – and we value it, too. Unfortunately, there is work underway at ICANN, the governing body for domain names, which will set new restrictions on privacy services like Domains By Proxy.

The restrictions are intended to target spammers, criminals and other bad guys, but providers like Domains By Proxy already have proven systems in place for addressing unlawful activity while balancing the privacy needs of our customers.

The overwhelming majority of online activity is legal and legitimate. However, the proposed restrictions would treat all domain and website owners as guilty until proven innocent, thereby requiring us to turn over your personal contact information (home address, home phone, etc.) to anyone who makes a claim against you – without a subpoena, search warrant or due process of any kind. The doors to your confidential information would be propped wide open.

The good news is that it’s not too late to change ICANN’s course. ICANN has opened a window for public comment on this program and is seeking input from the public. That’s where YOU come in. I encourage you to learn more about ICANN’s proposal and make your voice heard by signing the online petition to protect domain privacy at http://www.savedomainprivacy.org.

ICANN has set a deadline of July 7, 2015, so the window to act is short.

Public feedback will be an important factor in determining whether or not these new rules are adopted. I hope you take a few moments to join the campaign.

I don't always use whois privacy, but it's pretty useful for avoiding spam. It would be a shame to lose the feature if it ever happens.

I thouht as domain owners, we have alreay submitted all of our personal info to the domain, host provider, or Privacy Services. Most of them should be kept securely and confidentially. I think the gov agency could easily get them when necessary from  Privacy Services. Some ppl are cherishing their privacy. But they shouldn't be opened to the public! We need our online privacy!

My guess is that all privacy is gone anyway.  And probably has been for years.

When .gov says "Jump!", almost all of the companies say "How high?".  If they are not already all in cahoots (Google) with NSA, IRS, FBI, etc., etc.

I can only think of one (partial) solution: Get quiet ("Go Galt").

Run quiet, run deep.  Be faster and more nimble than the other poor S.O.B.'s...

Well, you know that having domains by proxy and all the other shades of domain privacy don't do jack s!@# for privacy when challenged by authorities right?

The Domains by Proxy is there to protect you from spammers and bots crawling the whois registry for email addresses to spam. That's in their TOS.

What the clearnet underground/criminal markets do is they card the site using other people's info.

Or else they go to hosting plans in uncooperative countries that use your DMCA claim as toilet paper.

It's a lost fight from the start. Even if they did implement what you're saying, which I believe is already implemented under the table. The only thing they need to do is make it so that people accept it as business as usual type of thing.

Like the previous poster above me I believe that your privacy is already gone anyway.

I have my domain and it's storage account in GoDaddy, couple of months back one of my email passwords reported unable to login due to incorrect password, though I haven't changed it and I knew it for sure, When I call GoDaddy, the asked me to change the password and re-login, I asked them to give the details what made such incident happen, they kept silent and trying to divert to another topics.

Not really firm about the privacy protection because as long as a company is a registrar they will be able to access our whois information even if we pay for it yearly to have the information concealed away from the public. I read before that google itself is also a registrar meaning that if they want that information they can still access it. Not sure how accurate is that. Currently the privacy protection only offers up to a certain level of protection from the public but it's still better than none.
