Can BitTorrent Be Better With Bitcoin?

BitTorrent has built solid reputation with the masses as being an instrument for 'free' but could it perform better and prove more popular with prices attached to downloads? That question could soon be answered following the debut of a new torrent client that allows leechers to pay seeders using Bitcoin.

I suppose those that have jobs and less time to sit around and wait for a download to complete that they'd be willing to tip those that offer some of their bandwidth to help streamline things.

I can see several advantages to this:

1. Seeders will receive income. {The income can be used to buy bigger hard drives and faster data lines}
2. There will be less Leechers. {Once they need to pay for something, they would leech less}
3. Software developers can gain some extra income from this. {Those who depend on donations}
4. More people would start seeding and this will push the prices down.

So yea... it will contribute to a better torrent network.... The payment should only be linked to a validated seed.  Wink

This is quite complicated. First of all, there will be very few leechers who are willing to tip, as the downloads are available for free from the other torrent sites. And secondly, if the seeders get monetary benefits in return for seeding, then the criminal charges against them can get a lot tougher (i.e if they are caught).

Yeah, I think it could work and it's a nice incentive for people to keep seeding when there's not much benefits otherwise.

A good source thanks.  Grin

Well, there are legitimate uses for these services..like they mentioned distribution of say Linux distro's  Wink

The Copyright holders are going to freak out, when they monetize these services.... Hold onto those hats... it's gonna get wild.

Actually some of the torrent sites have rules, saying that you should seed at least 80% of your download volume. If your Seed to Leech ratio falls below the 80% mark, then you will be banned from downloading any more torrents (happened to me many times in the past). Now these sites can just give the option of making a small payment with BTC, in case the user is unable to maintain the ratio at 80%.
