Put it in the data directory. The default locations are listed here: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Data_directory#Default_Location

To easily access to default location:
Press "Windows + R"
Type "%appdata%\Bitcoin" (without quotes)
Then past the files to this location.

It's verifying every block on the bootstrap.dat and indexing them Then it'll search for bitcoins that belongs to your bitcoin addresses on wallet.dat

It'll take 5 to 10 minutes (If you're using a mid-class computer i5 cpu etc.)

Im pretty sure valisdating the whole blockchain takes longer than 10 minutes even on a modern i5.

Since a few versions back the bootstrap.dat is no longer a speedup, it might in fact slow you down as you cant download the torrent and verify the data/build the local databse at the same time.

Im not really here, its just your imagination.

You are right, there is no point to the bootstrap since 0.10.0

You are right, there is no point to the bootstrap since 0.10.0

To elaborate a few points.

  • 0.10.0 can download the headers first, then it will be "synced" while it downloads the beefy data
  • on 0.10.0 budget 1 minute for each hour you are behind in the blockchain.  Most computers can do an hour a second, but I'm pessimistic
  • If your on dial-up 57k modem, or mountaintop microwave internet, with a 1995 IDE harddrive... it will take... well forever...
  • Bootstrap.dat is still missing the last year or so of block-chain data
  • Fastest way to get it all is to just put a usb key in a computer that has the whole block-chain and copy it that way
  • BitcoinJ or MultiBit, or something can all work without the blockchain... if you want

Your likely in for a wait, or look at running a partial node instead
