I used to like rap in the late nineties. But the rise of Gangsta rap put me right off it.
Late 90s....Gangster rap started in the late 80s and was just pushed harder mainstream at the time you mention. Trust me, if you go back you will hear more gritty gangster rap from the likes of Rapalot records.
Raps real change was to be less political and less race based. Once they realized it was actually the white kids pushing sales. But agree it became more about a formula.
Who else would go out and pick up almost weekly No Limit records releases? I had close to 30 nolimit albums in one year...lol! That was when I realized I was consuming to consume.
