I am all for decentralized exchanges but it seems it will take a while till that takes off.

Until that happens we need bitcoin exchanges popping up all over the place. The barrier to entry
is currently high for new bitcoin exchanges and one of the biggest hurdles is coding your own backend.
I think the community needs to get together and support an open source project that will make opening an exchange
a little less complicated and more secure.
One of the projects that attempted this is https://github.com/peatio/peatio but for whatever reason is not catching on and seems its an abandoned project.
Are there any other worth mentioning ?

The grue lurks in the darkest places of the earth. Its favorite diet is adventurers, but its insatiable appetite is tempered by its fear of light. No grue has ever been seen by the light of day, and few have survived its fearsome jaws to tell the tale.

The major reason such project fails is mostly but not limited to funding, if you know the developer, simply advise him to ask for donation regarding the project and he will get good response because it is a generally opinion project concerning bitcoin.

Try another script and another way here:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=35812.0
uses a heavily modified version of the old open source Intersango code, and remains open source here: https://github.com/dooglus/intersango/commits/aud

I'm all for DACs as well, but unfortunately we haven't seen much of those working out!
As for decentralized exchanges I have found a new project that might interest you. I suggest you take a look at this thread:

There are indeed many decentralized exchanges in the making but nothing to brag about yet.
What I'm looking for is something like peatio that is maintained by the community and allows
everyone to open an exchange.
I would get involved with peatio but its ruby (I would prefer python) and its not actively used/maintained.

I watch a lot of these projects. There are two types of projects: decentralized exchange Bitcoin-Forks and Bitcoin-Fiat.

As long as no one got around the need for an arbitrator:

Coinfeine
MercuryEx
Bitsquare

I really don't care much for decentralized.  I think Open Source is more important, and there is really nothing.

I've looked at Peatio and didn't like it for a few reasons:

1) It's in Node.Js, PHP is preferred.
2) Too many internal dependencies (See #1)
3) It's ugly

Then this Cryptsy clone (https://github.com/crypto-maniac/Cryptsy-Clone).  I briefly looked, but still not something I will use long term.  However I think it's a acceptable basis to work off with some effort.

1) Low quality/Sloppy code.
2) No trade engine

Make something that doesn't requiremen to download thousands of external 3rd party libraries, looks nice, and is written in PHP.
I'm sure it will catch on.   Grin

I think I understand you a little now, if you are going for cryptsy clone then is better you pay some money to a coder to check all the back door for you, the same goes with most open source scripts.
