Greece abandons the euro and adopts bitcoin - a lovely idea which would at least guarantee citizens could no longer be subject to summary devaluation at the knee. Alas only slightly more plausible than lenders accepting a No vote is a basis for debt relief.

Seeing this in RT is definitely bullish for bitcoin since it somehow reflects the Russian agenda. Also, it's positive marketing for bitcoin and shows where it could be used. If Greece adopts bitcoin then the price of bitcoin would definitely rise to 5000$ per bitcoin.

Nice clickbait OP Smiley I thought it was real news.
It is definitely a possibility, but how will people transition? just look at the ATMs full of old clueless people, how will they deal with Bitcoin when they can't even operate a computer?

it is and will remain nothing more than a fantasy. can't see any country, no matter how much problems they have, adopt bitcoin as main currency.

they will not adopt anything that they cannot control, they cannot certainly risk another time to be banckrupt, in the case bitcoin fall by a good portion

they will play a more conservative game now, if they really want a cryptocoin i think it's better for them to create their own and get rid of their dracma, or maybe call it dracmacoin....

I have relatives in Greece and almost nobody there is thinking about bitcoin. The smart ones already converted their money to US dollars months ago. Only the foolish sheep in Greece still have their money in the local banks.

The greek government have no money, how would they source the BTC for the change over.

Much cheaper and easier when you can just print your own currency.

It's a lovely thought (for us Wink) but I'm afraid I can't see anything like this happening for a long time. BTC may well go to the moon & gain mass adoption but I doubt a country will ever use it as their national currency. Not in my lifetime any way.

Like others have said it's just too early in BTC's lifespan to be used as a national currency, people just aren't ready for it plus the Greek government would shit themselves at the thought of not being able to be in 100% control.

It is a good idea, and there is lots of talking about it but I think now it might be a bit late for mass adoption in Greece, it is quite funny that there is only one ATM in the whole of Greece so I read Smiley

Well, i also think that bitcoin for greeks is not such a hot idea since they either already have cash or money is in the bank, which only allows them to withdraw euro 50/day right now.

However, this is hot news:

Financial Times (very respectable) reporting that "Greek banks prepare plan to raid deposits to avert collapse"-example is given as 30% haircut on above euro 8000 deposit.

Leaving Euro and going back to drachmas? That would be something! Their currency was one of the oldest in the world, so much history left behind...

Greek Island to Trial Gold-Backed Digital Currency Alternative to the Euro

It's happening, the Greeks are turning to cryptos for real now. It's only a matter of time until they adopt Bitcoin.

i dont think greece will be able to adopt bitcoin as main currency. there are lot of people in greece who dont have any idea about bitcoin.
it is not possible for every citizen of Greece to adopt bitcoin as their new currency because of lack of knowledge the technology and mostly old people have trust issues using crypto.

Greece needs large amounts of fiat currency right now.  They need millions of new pieces of paper for people to trade with each other.  Bitcoin is obviously not the answer.

Last week banks needed to open to serve thousands of pensioners who don't have debit cards and don't know how to use an ATM.  How do you think people like this will go with concepts such as 'blockchain', 'mining', 'where does a bitcoin  come from?'

this is just a dream by bitcoin users wishing to see the moon. i doubt that i can happen.
bitcoin is in its early stages and not still ready to be mass adopted. besides the government will not allow such thing because they can not control it and they are always better off printing their money .
on the other hand people are not ready and knowledgeable enough to accept bitcoin as their currency and for their day to day usage. there is a lot of old people who are confused to even use an ATM , let alone using bitcoin or a computer for that matter.

Yes, neither bitcoin is prepared for such a mass adoption nor is any other country to adopt it just yet. To have such an economic evolution, there should be massive changes at all of the different perspectives of the country's economy. It is not so easy for a whole country to go digital and adopt a crypto currency. It takes time, let's think less about profit but more about the bitcoin culture Smiley
