The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

The easiest way is to make up an address that nobody could possibly know the private key to and send coins there. An example burning address for Doge Coins could consist of a string of 34 letters beginning with a D, then followed by a string of words instead of random letters and numbers. Nobody could work out what the private key to it is, so nobody could retrieve any coins sent to it.
