Silk Road: Undercover agent admits stealing Bitcoin

A former US undercover agent involved in an investigation into the dark web marketplace Silk Road has admitted a series of crimes.

Carl Force, 46, faces up to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges of extortion, money-laundering and obstruction of justice.

He stole more than $700,000 (£448,000) in the digital currency Bitcoin.

Force also secretly solicited payment from the marketplace's operator for information about the US investigation.

During the course of the investigation, the former US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent posed as a drug dealer with connections to hit-men using the alias Nob.

He was given the task of communicating with Ross Ulbricht, the man who was subsequently jailed for life for running Silk Road, prosecutors said.

There's some degree of not only corruption but also entrapment involved in this whole Silk Road investigation and subsequent conviction. It's interesting that one of the thin blue line got lynched in this whole thing yet had no bearing on the conviction. The full story has and is coming out.

Imagine what would have happened, if the FBI agent stole hard cash instead of Bitcoin. 

There would have been no evidence if he had stolen hard cash. But evidence can't be hidden in the case of Bitcoin. I still remember the infamous Mexican drug cartel (Zhenli Ye Gon) cash seizure. Some $250 million in hard cash, as well as hundreds of millions of USD worth of bullion and other items were seized. At that time, there were rumors that the initial stash accounted for more than $1 billion worth of banknotes, but the Mexican cops stole most of it.
