Why would this value not show on the standard graph?

They really want to know it this time! This backlog will take a day to clear.

I notice it is taking a long time to open my wallet also. (Bitcoin core) It is just stuck on verifying blocks for 30 minutes or so. Usually only takes 10 minutes or so.

Is there actually a reachable mempool size that could seriously disrupt the normal operations of network clients?

What transactions does it filter? Why would it filter transactions at all?

No idea. Coinwalleteu was never heard from.

I have two conspiracy theories:

1. Blocksize politics

2. Either tradeblock.com or statoshi.info are behind this. They always show by far the largest values (tx/s and mempool size) and thus are always the sites that are referenced during these tests. It is a tremendous publicity for them.

I highly doubt that statoshi.info is behind this because the guy that runs the site probably doesn't have the money or infracstructure to carry out this prolonged spam attack. Possibly tradeblock, but still a stretch. Why would they want to anyways?

Also, I think statoshi's data is more reliable than tradeblock's because it reflects the mempool of miners. Tradeblock's seems to be every unconfirmed transaction broadcasted which will include transactions that are dropped by nodes and miners.

...

10:27 PM US ET

I come back after some 5 hours, and see that things have not improved.  My earlier transaction was receiving a small payment with approx. $0.00 as mining fee, that was many hours ago.  Still unconfirmed.

I had this idea of trying to send $2.00 or so to one of my addresses, and pay $0.05 to see what happens, but I can't even log on to blockchain.info (my "Trx Wallet") to even try that.

Ugh.

*****  Perhaps an answer might be to ban payments of under $0.01 and/or fees under, say, BTC0.0002?  *****

OK, just for my own fun (?), education, and entertainment, I sent a small amount of BTC between addresses, and included a 0.0006 ($0.16) miner's fee.  Let's see if it goes through and gets confirmed anytime soon.  (I was able to get on blockchain.info after trying a few times)

If it does NOT get confirmed in a reasonable amount of time, then that throws into some doubt the utility of the Bitcoin Ecosystem while under this attack...

EDIT:

Transaction confirmed.

I guess it is only very low fees NOT getting confirmed.

Looks like the transaction spam might be slowing down a little bit, I'm only seeing a few transactions per second now. Some serious strain on the network though, looks like the peak transactions per second was 212 (!) according to this page.

is looks likes things have slowed down, i wonder if they are trying to break the 200k transaction mark has all time high, i dont know if it was just me but i saw more the 200 transactions per second i thought is way 457 at peak.

Well i just received a transaction without any issue, but i see that unconfirmed transactions are at 10 000, and mempool at 12 MB tho.
Don't know if the bigger block sizes only are the solution to this problem, but something definitely needs to be done, because if there's a lot of people that cant get their transactions confirmed, it's looking bad.

cheers

bigger blocks will change nothing.  if someone spams alot it will slow down other people's spam. thats all!.  the only people affected are those sending tiny payments like $0.005 without fee and those using online wallets that are too cheap to add fees to their customer's transactions.

if you promote spam you would like to increase spam per second.

REGULAR TRANSACTIONS ARE NOT AFFECTED AND WILL NOT BE AFFECTED

THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BLOCKSIZE.

all it is is A SPAM BACKLOG!

DO NOT PROMOTE SPAM.  when bitcoin supports spam your investment will be worth exactly 0

172,000 transactions in last 24 hours.  A record.  Over 200k soon?  Sounds like they should of solved the block size increase issue weeks ago rather then arguing about it.

no blocksize has nothing to do with it.  172k SPAM transactions NOT CONFIRMED IS A GOOD THING.

DO NOT PROMOTE SPAM!
