Hacking Team gets hacked as attackers expose 400GB of corporate data
HACKING TEAM, a company that sells malware and spyware technology to government, law enforcement and intelligence agencies, has been hit by a large-scale security breach that has exposed the firm's internal emails, files and source code.
The breach exposed all of the company's corporate data in what is quite an ironic attack. The hackers, whose identities are unknown, took over Hacking Team's Twitter page and posted links to a torrent file comprising more than 400GB of the company's data for anyone to download.
Hacking Team is a security outfit responsible for several tools used in government surveillance. The people and companies that used the service had never been formally disclosed. Until now.
One of the more controversial aspects of Hacking Team's past is that it was accused of selling spyware and targeted surveillance malware to Sudan. The company denied this at the time, but the recently leaked data suggests otherwise.
One file shows how the company instructed the Sudanese government to pay €480,000 by wire transfer for systems that were used to access a subject's personal information. ... more
