Antminer S5: Not mining

Hi,

My Antminer S5 won't hash at the moment. A short while after turning it on the fans (2 x SP120 Performance Edition fans replacing the noisy stock fan) go quiet and the D1 LED on the control board flashes (D2, D3 and D4 go out). The mining status screen shows this:

I currently have the S5 powered by my old BFL power supplies (pic taken before first switch on with stock fan still fitted):

The setup seem to work fine for a while and then it started beeping and since then nothing.

It seems that something is not working how it should. Try with some brand PSU with at least 750W or stronger. If problem continues then it is something with control pcb. Also did you tried with different firmwares?

i am not an hardware expert so i stand corrected, but you should really get a better PSU as mentioned above

Some one posted about the bfl running  the s-5  I answered that thread.  I told that person under clock the gear.

so under clock the gear to freq 300 see if it runs.

if you can get the gui to work you can underclock the s-5 to freq 275  .  your psu might work at that freq ..  you get about 810-850 gh


so you have the gui running down clock to freq 275 or 300 see if it works.

Phil is right what you are using is not really quality PSU's.  Try at a lower freq and see if it works.  Most likely it will work if you find right freq.

Long term I would get a real PSU either ATX or Server that works well.   I think you will get full speed after switching from those BFL psu's

2) if not hashing, one or both hash boards are damaged.

In case of one boards is damaged, S5 firmware has a bug which will cause complete miner to freeze in few minutes. If you find which board is damaged, you have to unplug it to make S5 work with one blade only.

his gear pulls about 600 watts.

so he is exactly at the max of that psu.

Yes, his freq might be too high for his PSU, so first step is IMO test if the boards are working at lowest freq. If so, just use better PSU. If not, boards are probably gone. Test can be done with existing tools he have instead of buying new PSU and doing test with the same results. I have OCZ 550W PSU which is very very sh*tty, very thin cables, poor regulation, so only possible frequency is 237.5Mhz and voltage drops less than 10V at load.

i have the exact same problem with my S5 and i have lots of power supplies although nothing above a 750 i have tried three different ones the best being a corsair ax760i also a evga supernova 750w surely these are powerfully enough ive yet to try two power supplies on separate hashing boards and after multiple discussion with bitmain they have no solution i have taken the miner to bits swopped cables checked the beagle some of the soldering looked patchy so i even touched that up   

anyone give me any help? oh and yes ive updated and reset the firmware more times than i can count on 15 hands

I don't know your skill level but it's hard to say what your soldering did.  Good or bad we just cannot say.

I wish you had a PSU with a little more power that I knew of top of head had 4 seperate power cords or PCIe (not connectors but cords).   

But try to turn down freq and see what happens if it starts to work.

It is very important to use single rail PSU because on multi rail PSU it is very difficult to know how they are split on physical cables and then things can get very nasty.

thanks for the replies to my queries the nova has single rail pcies and same problem i enjoy collecting power supplies so im open to a suggestion or a definate to the BEST psu  in terms of single rail and watts  budget in the area of $150 £100 ish   as my £350 paper weight is annoying me

Cost effective option for mining will be server PSU + breakout board.
Wherever ou buy them, they will always be more cost effective and reliable than ATX PSUs.
For a single S5, or 2 underclocked, a DPS1200 FBA off Ebay or similar places will cost 25-30€
Breakout board + 8 cables will be around 60€ shipped.

But if you already have several single rails PSUs over 450w, you can use a separate one for each panel of the S5.
I assume you don't have a second S5 available, or you could try to swap controllers.
Also, you can try to start with only one panel at a time connected for the data cable (16 or 18 pins depending on revision).

If nothing works, check if it's still under warranty and send the whole miner to the address Bitmain will give you.

If it's not under warranty, and depending on how much you'd want for it, I may be interested to buy it to salvage some components for my  projects, (assuming you'll ship from UK, and I'm in France).
