There is a risk with every single crypto currency (even BTC) that it could end up worth nothing at all.

Jonny's Pool - Mine with us and help us grow!  Support a pool that supports Bitcoin, not a hardware manufacturer's pockets!  No SPV cheats.  No empty blocks.

But the risk of such thing is remote and probably would happen after years, right?

Also, the aforementioned coins are open source, which means that the original developers can left the project and it will still be under development, unlike Paycoin (XPY), which is not open source, right?

There are hundreds of alts. There aren't that many miners and traders. It's inevitable that quite a few will fade to dust. I'm sure a fair few have their die hard supporters but there comes a time when it's totally pointless to continue. A few have been revived from the dead but I'd never put a decent amount of money into the more obscure ones. There might only be 5-10 people involved in extreme cases.

I was thinking in investing a good amount of money in Tekcoin and Diamond, but now I'm feeling kinda scared. Are these coins too risky to invest in?

To weigh the risks against the rewards, try to research if there is enough interest for the coin you are planning to invest in. Are there any developments being made to it? Plans of the dev to move forward and continue on making developments? Is there an active developer willing to communicate with the community to solve some problems? Are there any unique attributes in this coin that you can't see in others?

Those are some of the things you should consider before investing on to a coin. Best of luck.

Oh and one more thing, beware of pump and dump coins. If you think the price jump is insane (say 100% overnight) stay away. It might be a possible pump and dump coin.

Aren't all of them?

Volume is an important indicator. Forget market cap. Neither of those coins went above $1500 worth traded in the latest 24 hr period. That's all exchanges I assume.

If you're looking to make your next million then pouring a significant amount into either of those will just reward the existing holders who'll probably dump it straight back down to before where you started.

Say you spend a significant amount of BTC and it goes up by a factor of 10 or more, the markets are so thin you might get 2-5% of your riches out before they're bled dry.

If you want to just make a small amount of BTC with an equally small investment, if you don't mind never seeing it again then go for it.

Yes, I forgot about volume, too. Also, there is a rich list on exchanges wherein you can see how many coins are the top coins holders are holding. That could possibly help you out, too, in choosing what coins you want to invest in.

Thank you very much for citing the volume factor, because I didn't know it was useful for this matter. In this case, I think I'm better investing in Peercoin. The sad part is that it pays a tiny 1% interest rate per year  Undecided

Obviously volume can change if a coin really takes off, but if it's a traditionally low volume one that goes berserk then it's likely to be pumped and strangled.

If you can ride that up and get out in time, great. I'd be happier with a coin that was always liquid regardless of what it was doing. You can enter and leave when you want without the possibility of being trapped.

Yeah, I guess you are fully right. But a cryptocurrency that pays a fixed 50% interest rate like DMD is sooo tempting. Meanwhile, Getting only 1% through peercoin is the opposite. I still don't know which one to invest in.

What is the best coin among all POS/POS+POW at this moment? Or is it better to forget altcoins and invest solely in Bitcoin?

What are your aims?

Asking which alt to invest in is a dangerous business on here. There are far too many vested interests floating around. Much better to come to your own conclusion after plenty of homework.

My aim is to be successful in the cryptocurrency world. I wish I had invested at least 100 dollars in Bitcoins in ~2013, but there is a so called "if" in this case. Look at this chart: http://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/diamond/

It's so exciting to see that raise in the price. Also, it's both a POS and a very rare currency, which IMO means that it is going to be even more expensive. But I'm a complete "n00b" in tradings, as you guys can see. I've made a profit of around 4 dollars with just 17 dollars in a really short period (1 day, if I'm not mistaken) with peercoin, and another few dollars by investing in Bitcoins, but that's it.

I think you are right... But is it too risky to invest even in litecoin, compared to bitcoin?

Everything's a risk but Litecoin is a far better bet than most out there. The Chinese love it, there are plenty of miners and it's the number two. If I remember rightly the volume during the recent rise overtook Bitcoin's briefly.

It looks like there's still plenty of life left in it but don't get caught on the wrong side of the market. It's still pure speculation.

There is a risk with every single crypto currency (even BTC) that it could end up worth nothing at all.

Not just crypto, every currency period.   Countries fall, currencies get changed, economies collapse.   After WW2, Germans were carrying around reichsmarks by the bag.   It could happen anywhere.

all the altcoins that are created so far has the risk of going down to 0 satoshi worth
but this process takes time, it is not like you wake up one morning and a coin's price goes from 0.01BTC to 0

Weak hands have been complaining about missing out ever since bitcoin was $1 and never buy the dip.
Whales are those who keep buying the dip.
