President Vladimir Putin tells West not to fear Russia

Russia is not a threat to Nato, President Vladimir Putin says.

"Only an insane person and only in a dream can imagine that Russia would suddenly attack Nato," Mr Putin told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

The Western alliance is bolstering its military presence in its eastern European members in response to their fears of Russian threat, following its involvement in the Ukraine conflict.

Nato says that Russia is backing rebels in Ukraine - a claim denied by Moscow.

Early this month, Nato pledged to counter "hybrid warfare" from Russia - which included a mixture of conventional military tactics, subversive campaigns and cyber-warfare that Russia was using in Ukraine.

Three Baltic countries are preparing to ask for a permanent presence of Nato troops on their soil to act as a deterrent to the Russian military.

A 5,000-strong Nato "spearhead" force is being established and six small headquarters set up to co-ordinate operations.

In his interview with Corriere della Sera, Mr Putin said some countries were "simply taking advantage of people's fears with regard to Russia" in order to receive "some supplementary military, economic, financial or some other aid".

"There is no need to fear Russia," Mr Putin said.

"The world has changed so drastically that people with some common sense cannot even imagine such a large-scale military conflict today. We have other things to think about, I assure you."

Heavy fighting has erupted in Ukraine this week, focusing on the towns of Maryinka and Krasnohorivka, west of rebel-held Donetsk.

The opposing sides have accused each other of shattering February's Minsk ceasefire, requiring them to withdraw heavy weapons from the frontline.

Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko told a news conference on Friday that Russia had massed troops on the border and in rebel-held areas "in unprecedented numbers" - but Russia again denied that its military was involved in Ukraine.

Mr Poroshenko said Ukraine has deployed 50,000 troops in the conflict zone to meet the threat.

More than 6,400 people have been killed in eastern Ukraine since the conflict began in April 2014, when rebels seized large parts of two eastern regions, following Russia's annexation of the Crimea peninsula.

The Ukraine crisis is on the agenda of talks of leaders of the most industrialised group of countries - the G7 - beginning on Sunday, without Russia - usually its eighth member.

Thousands of police officers are being deployed near the venue at Schloss Elmau castle, 60 miles (100km) south of Munich.

A demonstration over policies on climate change, wealth inequality - as well as conflicts in a number of countries - was held in the nearby town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen on Saturday. More than 30,000 attended a rally in Munich on Thursday.

He's been saying that but how is the West to believe him with pictures like these...

He plays the role of "ruling with an iron fist" perfectly! It's all a part his plan, the West decides to trust him, he offers the West some resource like food to a baby deer, the West approaches cautiously...first one slow step, then another...the west thinks "Maybe he's not so bad?". The deer goes to reach for the food and with nose down, eating peacefully, bang! The deer is shot and Putin has caught his dinner!

Talk like this needs to happen for a LONG time before the West start's to take his word.

Once a KGB, always a KGB. High level intelligence officials aren't to be trusted because they're working under the radar and want you to have the wrong picture of what they're up to. As bad as the US.gov is, cozying up w/ Putin isn't a pleasant alternative.

Putin is already 62 years old, and in my opinion he is going to retire in less than 5 years time. He is not going to provoke any major wars during this time-period. For example, despite the numerous provocations from the NATO, he has restrained from directly attacking the junta forces in Ukraine. That said, I will be closely following the POTUS elections of 2016. Things will get really bad if that warmonger Hillary gets elected as the POTUS.

62 is not that old for a politic, Putin could rule for another 8 years with ease. Putin won't attack any NATO country because it would provoke III World War and he is not dumb enough for that.
But there is problem with whole political class in Russia - normal people don't rule in Russia, in Russian parliament there are many former KGB and other internal agencies agents.

He could do anything in 5 years, I guess he has made plans in years ago, and now he will running that plans. It just depends on his reaction with next US President election, who will win it. And although he retire, there are many his sympathizers who will continue his work.

Putin has already found a way to bypass the Russian laws and to rule more than 2 permissible terms, and he can do it again if he wants.
I think that Putin does not want third world war because Russia could live well from the sale of oil and gas to EU and they do not have economic and political reasons for it.
However, Ukraine and neighboring countries are a different story, and here Russia will not give up, believing that they are protecting their strategic interests.
It's sad that USA and EU will not do anything in order to protect Ukraine and other countries in this area from Russia.

What else can tell Putin? Years ago has made a big mess with Georgia (Abkhazia and South Ossetia). Now with Ukraine (Crimea and southern and eastern Ukraine). What else must do to be credible for the others? Remain to send nuclear missile to someone to be totally credible....

Its very sad that UN and NATO didn't anything to prevent US invasion in Iraq and Afghanistan. If Russia is bad, then US is worse then imo. Putin is a person who can keep balance of the world power from US.

What you mean by "NATO didn't did anything"? It was NATO which invaded Iraq and Afghanistan. And there is not much difference between the US policies and the NATO policies. And regarding the power balance, earlier the USSR kept the balance of power in place. But right now, Russia is incapable of assuming that role. A China-Russia axis might succeed in creating a new balance of power.

Russia is unable to keep balance of the world power from US. Sooner or later will fail. It is impossible that the economy of Russia compete with the economy of Us. The only power that Russia have is the military one. With this can compete. But without the economy this will not last. Like the old URSS.

You should notice what I said, right at the bolded part. NATO didn't prevent, but help US to invade, although NATO has power to prevent them.

Your own word meant Russia still keep balance of the world until now. Russia doesn't need to improve their economy to equal their position with US. History have proven us so far, and it will stand in next dozen of years, depends on who lead Russia

The only power that Russia have is the military one? Russia is the no.1 producer of crude oil and natural gas in the world, and it is rich in other natural resources, such as coal, copper, nickel, gold, diamonds.etc.

And regarding the Russian economy, I'll admit the fact that they won't be able to compete with the Americans. But a combined Russian-Chinese economy could overtake the Americans easily.

I think 'overtake' is not a something good for the world. It just make an unbalance power in earth and it will be a problem then which the 'leader' will rule this world like he want. Just let two big power country, US and Russia keep balance of the world.

Nothing is truly a thread until it really happens. That is the game they play in politics and this rule will never ever change. Which may be why countries are more concern about such meaningless issues than caring for their people.

Who should get the Oscar? Hillary Cinton, or George W Bush or Vladimir Putin? Remember the Pinoccibitch lying about landing under sniper fire in Sarajevo? If you don't remember it, then watch this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHVEDq6RVXc

And do you remember her lying about Libya and Benghazi? And what about GW Bush lying about all those weapons of mass destruction in Iraq?

Do you really think there is an honest politician? It sounds ridiculous, because a politician can't get support from his society if he speak truth. Then you should ask yourself, is you president an honest person? And we are talking about a great leader who can lead big country like Russia and never afraid of US or EU.

I think it's less of an issue of there being honest politicians and more of an issue that the people aren't honest which is why they never vote for people who will genuinely improve their lives.

It's true. Russia have primary resources. To many. I will refine my reasoning and argumentation. The URSS had those resources too. But again has failed. Why? Because was unable to elaborate and use those in the proper way. The key word in this problem is: technology and brain. URSS (like Russia today) was able to compete (like I wrote above) only in military thing. Because there were concentrated every technology and brain.  Then stop. But the economy is more more complicated. Have to many other needs. USA do this. URSS didn't do this. I think that today's Russia will follow the road and the destiny of URSS. If will continue this way.
