CAIRO — An Egyptian navy vessel was targeted on Thursday by militants affiliated with the Islamic State group, who claimed they destroyed it with a rocket while it was anchored off the Sinai peninsula's Mediterranean coast.

Egyptian military spokesman Brig. Gen. Mohammed Samir said the vessel caught fire in an exchange of fire with "terrorists" on the shore and that there were no fatalities among its crew members. He did not say how much damage the vessel suffered and gave no details on the type of ship or the size of its crew.

However, security officials said an unspecified number of crew members suffered injuries from the fire and that several of them jumped overboard to escape the raging fire.

...

The attack on the ship is the first of its kind by the IS affiliate in Egypt, representing a qualitative evolvement in the military capabilities of the group, whose campaign of violence has been mostly restricted to the northern part of Sinai bordering Gaza and Israel. Its claim of responsibility for Thursday's attack on the vessel is the second in as many days for major operations, or attempted ones.

I wouldn't characterize it as bold or a sign of increased strength. ISIS has had rocket launchers for a long time. And their goal is to take over the "infidels", which is the rest of the world! Eventually they were going to actively attack a government military. This may be the beginning of the end. Any of the major military forces in the world could demolish ISIS in very quick time, it's just a matter of not starting that war until ISIS comes knocking on the door, causing havoc, such that there's no choice but to defend he world against their barbaric ideology.

I don't think it's a question of being militarily stronger; any formal army on Earth can easily outgun them. It's a question of being able to engage them. The guerrilla style warfare makes it quite hard to fight them for a prolonged period of time. They attack is small numbers, in urban areas. What's interesting here (and why I say the attack is bold) is they didn't target defenseless civilians, as they are prone to do, but a warship capable of immediately engaging them. That they still succeeded in blowing up the ship is somewhat surprising then.

Everytime they go into Iraq they get free American weapons as the Iraq forces flee. Its such a obvious way to arm the enemy imo,so that unrest can continue to fester.

No it's not.  There is nothing tactical or strategic about point-aim-fire.  There is not even a skirmish or battle which shows the relative organization of the two adversaries.

Pretty bold.

Their tactics of public executions got them more attention than the attack on the Egyptian Navy.
They wouldn't want to unnecessarily take on a regional power.

The NATO is repeating the same mistake which they made in Syria. NATO is refusing to aid the Egyptians, and they are not that fond of the Egyptian president, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. But they have to realize that right now, Sisi is the only one who can eradicate the Islamic State from Egypt. The main priority should be the eradication of the ISIS.

They are using guerilla tactics but have no real army. If they were forced to fight an open battle they would be cleared quicker than Saddam's forces in Iraq.
Allowing them to run around set bombs and murder prisoners is a mistake.

I would think the point of attacking a navy ship would be a show of force as a recruiting tool, as in look how powerful we are, you should join us and benefit from all we can offer you. Because there's not a lot of benefit in attacking people who can fight back, and engaging a military vessel is a marked departure from murdering unarmed civilians.

Obviously, no one is letting them do anything. It's not as simple as just "fix the mistake of letting them plant bombs." The problem is they operate in the shadows and the attacks are done in ways that cannot be prevented 100% of the time: car bombs in crowded places, suicide attacks, etc. This does raise the question as to whether attackers like this can even be defeated militarily. What is more crucial may be to win the war of ideology to cut off recruits to the cause.

ISIS will try by all means to dominate the whole world , their organizations have all over the world . Commit terrorist attacks in all parts of the continent , particularly in Europe, have begun to expand their action . I think we should world powers that little extra pay attention to this organization, which is in full gallop .

They are spreading like cancer. Earlier they were confined to Syria and Iraq. Now they have established themselves in Yemen, Nigeria, Somalia, Afghanistan, Libya.etc. And if you think that Europe is immune to the ISIS, then you are wrong. They have de facto control of several villages in Muslim European nations such as Bosnia, Kosovo and Albania. Check this:

Wow. I can't believe after all that happened people still write nonsense like this.
They are in Egypt exactly because of Sisi. And they started in Iraq exactly because of ill-conceived eradication efforts by the US. So yeah - let's just repeat the pattern more  Roll Eyes

WTF? Does ISIS have access to anti-ship weaponry?
Are there any considerations from Egypt to go to war with ISIS? It seems recently that ISIS has really started putting pressure on their boarders and now this.

WTF? The ISIS gained a foothold in Egypt, as a result of the religious radicalization policies which were pursued by Mohamed Morsi of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood. Fortunately, he was ousted from power and replaced by the secular politician Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Without al-Sisi, all of Egypt would have been under the ISIS rule by now.
