Ebay Forbids Bitcoin for Payments

But this is not new news? When did EBAY ever allow listings where the seller was willing to take btc as a payment. Im sure they have been taking down those listing for the better part of the last 3 years.

No this is not new news, I had a listing taken down 2 years ago for saying I wouold accept btc.  

Obviously they know people are looking to use btc, but why would they allow listing to be hosted on their website, only to have people complete tranactions in btc and avoid their listing fees.  Similarly if they knew you were going to say send a check and avoid the fees, they wouldnt allow that.

Will be interesting to see if they try to put all this effort into actually allowing btc to be used as payment, rather than wasting all this effort banning its use.  They could really open up a HUGE potential for btc use as tey are already worldwide and the largest place to sell stuff online.

The simple option here is to allow Paypal accounts to be funded with bitcoin, I think they have much to gain with this, probably it's even better for them than current system only allowing credit and debit cards.

That may solve the issue perfectly. EBay could still process "PayPal" payments and not care too much how the transaction is funded.

If they wanted to steer clear of btc just make sure they state all seller fees are paid in fiat. Then let the buyer and seller choose how the money goes in or out of their PayPal acct. Simple solution and eBay doesn't have to deal with btc.

Bitcoin has no consumer protection, eBay and Paypal are very big on consumer protection, it makes sence sellers cannot use bitcoin as a payment method on their platform.

They also do not permit cash and a bunch of other payment methods, this isn't something new...

Gotta agree with you on this one.

Unless a payment method is capable of being charged back I doubt they would consider using it. They have so many disputes to resolve that they have to stick to something allowing charge backs. Perhaps they might start accepting Bitcoin if they start using a third party service that holds Bitcoin payments in escrow until it's been confirmed there is no chargeback.'

eBay can be the escrow if they wanted, and holds the bitcoin for 6 months until after chargeback period. They don't want to because there is too few people using bitcoins. They also own PayPal. PayPal is making a lot of money for eBay, they are not going to kill their own golden goose for bitcoin.

This is confusing. eBay doesn't conduct or handle any payments. eBay uses PayPal and they just decided to spin off the PayPal unit, so this sounds like a non-issue.

Yes, I really thought with the spin off of paypal eBay would become a lot more accepting of bitcoin.  But this suggests otherwise.  Maybe something else is going on with the OP?

Ebay are looking into adding bitcoin as a payment option, but only when they see it is right and they understand totally. With Bitcoin you have no control over payments, once its sent payment is final and the customer in their eyes being the consumer their is no wrights. If their was protection over transactions like paypal as or any other service having option to contact them to issues a refund or to make a dispute this is where Bitcoin lacks as all payments are final, unless the receiver sends it back upon request. Ebay are looking at the tech behind Bitcoin and its security benefits and no doubt maybe see something like baycoin come out with their own controls over it. If Ebay looked past and said ok lets accept it on a trial run and get a bunch of beta testers to test it out then they would see a lot more to it and to better understand it.

the only approved payment on ebay is paypal which they own. 

ebay and paypal are separating into different companies so people don't complain about the unfair access.

if a seller wishes to offer bitcoin, seashells, or cash in the mail along with paypal (a requirement).  it should be up to his customer to decide which method is easiest and offers most security.

Yup that'd have been a major step in promoting bitcoin and making it popular among general masses and populace... eBay accepting bitcoin would have allowed a large number of population a chance to get to know about the bitcoin and bitcoin community and what it would mean to use the e-currency for making their transactions...

Hope such large corporations do someday integrate bitcoin as a method of paying and accepting for their purchases...

Indeed, if anything happens it will be PaypalCoin a centralized currency with the exact same options as paypal for buyer protections. This could have benefits, such as exchanging BTC->PPCoin and not needing a bank middleman.

The reasons they "ban" bitcoin is so scammers don't hijack accounts, then edit listings to include a bitcoin payment address conning somebody into losing their money. They want to enforce a paypal only payment system unless using ebay escrow for bank wires through ebay vehicle sales.

i think one the many reasons that these big companies are not considering accepting bitcoin as a payment method is that they might be afraid of the anonymity it offers
also it can be because of all the other criminal activity that can be done easier using bitcoin. like what happened in silk road.

Very strange. This behavior is contrary the spirit of the last months in this matter. I think that this temporary and soon they will find the way to accept again bitcoin and the merchants that had adopted such way of payment.

Carl Icahn bought a majority shareholder stake in eBay, then proceeded to clown them at every opportunity to point out how incompetent eBay management is by keeping PayPal combined with eBay and basically forced them to spin it off into a separate company so PP can compete with Apple payments and Stripe. Too bad, I was happy they were going to let PP wither and die still clinging to ebay.

Ever since they announced the split PP profits soared as now competitors to eBay can use it. Ebay's retard CEO and board members were all ousted too, so the incoming guy is bringing back the 'mom and pop' style businesses to eBay they rejected to pander to Target and other bigbox corps under the last CEO buffoon that ran eBay into the ground. The split also means eBay can take rival payment methods now too, so can resume your lobbying for BTC when he takes over though still unlikely to happen, but you never know all those idiots are out of there now.

Edit: so apparently PP has a 5yr agreement with eBay to remain sole payment provider, so hopefully they die off by 2020 and if they don't then can resume bitcoin lobbying

if they are cutting the bridge with paypal, which was going to use bitcoin, i don't think that they have any interest in using bitcoin, they also said why, they thing that it does not offer a customers protection

i believe his is the same reason why amazon will not accept it for now, they are all waiting to find a way to make it more secure for users

i think they will come around eventually, but it needs much longer time and a lot more mass adoption. now it is simply not enough people showing interest in using bitcoin in comparison to people wanting to use paypal and similar services.
on the other hand they want to secure their earnings via paypal and don't lose their step there.

Yes and if ever the time comes that they'll start to accept bitcoin as a form of payment, eBay would be a scammer's paradise. Post fake stuff and takes away that bitcoin unless they offer an escrow-like service to hold the funds.
