Best Antivirus for Windows 8

I was thinking of installing an antivirus in my new laptop. Previously I used to use ESET but seems it isn't the best anymore.
What are your suggestions or what do you have on your system ?

Windows defender in conjunction with brain.exe is sufficient.

brain.exe is the most important protection that runs in your brain, because when the malware is modified with a FUD crypter, no antivirus will protect you.
Don't bother installing a bundle like Norton; it just slows down your computer.

Always used Avast with success. However I avoiding the malware in the first place is mainly down to the person habits and security practices.

I would argue that this is false (except the brain.exe part). Windows defender is not enough especially if you're involved with a lot of coins and whatnot. Just look at the tests from January and February, it is far under the industry average. As far as I know they have shifted their focus to Xbox One and Windows 10 after which windows defender started to fall behind.
There was (is) a thread about which is the best AV in this very section. I keep BitDefender on aggressive mode, just to make sure.

Malwarebytes AntiMalware is the one I use and I would say it's pretty good but only the paid version, the free one doesn't provide real time protection and you need one which is always actively on watch. I try to be careful as much as possible and avoid links which might contain some nasty viruses but if you have real time protection it catches anything that comes off from any such sites.

I am currently using ESSET. I don't how is it doing because I am not using Internet in extensive measures but hope it does stay ALIVE !!!

If you’re using Windows 7 or Windows Vista, bear in mind that the Windows Defender included with these versions of Windows is not an antivirus product. It’s an anti-spyware program that doesn’t protect you from malware. Windows Defender is only an antivirus product on Windows 8, not on earlier versions of Windows.

 You can't PAY me to use that abortion called Windows 8. Debateably THE WORSE excuse for a MS operating system release, though ME and MS-DOS 4.0 can argue the point.



 I use AVG on my single Win7 and multiple XP systems. It seems to do the job well enough to date that I've not bothered looking at alternatives.

 "The Best" in virus protection has been a moving target for Windows machines for decades. LINUX on the other hand rarely gets virus attacks, since it inherently has a LOT fewer security holes and they tend to get FIXED (as opposed to Windows holes just getting papered over or relocated a bit) pretty fast.




 Look up a report that was widely posted some years back about a Microsoft vice president that got fired, something like a month or two, after a confrence where he mentione that some Windows security issues CAN'T be fixed without breaking backwards compatability with older programs.

1. Using common sense is not a replacement (but necessary nevertheless) for an antivirus, unless you are not connected to internet not connect anything via ports, or even wifi.
2. Windows Defender isn't really very good. Go for the expert ones in the field instead. Free or paid. Paid if you have sensitive info.
3. Having a malware fighter like malwarebytes or mbam helps, though currently I don't use them. Complement it with an anti-virus for full protection. Free ones are quite enough for an average user (assuming the user has common sense).
4. And don't save your passwords anywhere, esp. in your browser. and don't use the same password for a service you trust and something you don't. and other better advices you can find on the internet regarding passwords.

I am using Avast on my computer on Windows 7 ultimate  operating system for quite some time now I am satisfied with its performance.

Avira Free antivirus is working fine on windows 7 and windows XP, I think it would work on windows 8 too.

No, it is not. Please stop spreading this false knowledge among people. There are certain tests that rank the software according to its performance.
While the industry average is quite high, some are pretty bad right now (e.g. Windows Defender).

I likes kaspersky as well. Enterprise and Home both good stuff.

Exactly,IMO downloading one of these "money doubling programs", suspicious looking programs impersonating flash player etc... is like asking someone to hack your computer.
