Make sure, You're asking about the size of bitcoin WALLET or size of whole BLOCKCHIN? bitcoin wallet(BTC core) is of ~11MB. Blockchain is of ~40GB, i think.

I don't think anything...  but I could b wrong.

I just think of the wallet.dat file as encrpyted private keys.

if you are talking about wallet size then its not going to affect the future of bitcoin as its only kb unless you have made quite a lot of transactions and then its normally a few mb. you can always replace the wallet when its getting to big

I have several wallet backups and they range in size from 400 KB, probably the first backup, to 4 MB which is one of the later images. I opened one up with notepad just to peak and as others have indicated you will see a bunch of random gibberish, at least nothing in human readable format.

You cannot. All you will get is a bunch of garbled text. You need to use something like pywallet to get it into a human readable format.

I assume they are encrypted, probably sha, I am not sure how file encryption works but I don't think those will be able to be broken at all or by any asic.
SHA is not an encryption, it is a hashing algorithm. The wallet uses AES encryption with a key derived from your password using SHA512.

my last wallet dat size was 4 mb. And my balance is like .73 btc.

It shouldnt be that much, unless you have a huge balance.

it can be, and it's not based on the balance, but on the amount of transactions like i said above, and how many addresses you have created

the amount of bitcoin has nothing to do with it, for example right now i have 2.41 btc with 1.7mb, less than your, because i'm re using some addresses

Exactly.

The getwalletinfo command tells me I have done over 8700 transactions, and now my wallet.dat file size is about 68 MB.

Lets see:
|~size|#TX
fresh|96KB|0
regular|2MB|~300
spam[1]|421MB|195508

[1] its the ~100 leaked private keys related to the spam attack. I opened and resynced it just for this thread which took me ~7 hours. Bitcoin core acts very slow with such a big wallet file. It was ~110 MB before opening it, most of the time was resyncing.

Im not really here, its just your imagination.

BitStamp's wallet (from the since removed security doxting) was over 4GB.

Lots of transactions.

If you want, you can export only your UTXO addresses and purge the rest.  Although you should make sure you keep the key to whatever your "public" bitcoin address is.

All the rest are likely change addresses.

Usually around 100kb to 2mb, depends on the number of transactions made by the whole wallet. But if you're asking for the whole blockchain, that is almost 40gb as of this moment.
