Hey! My name is Doug. This whole bitcoin thing is fairly new to me. I was under the misapprehension that my wallet was the bitcoin client. I've sat for a month or so wondering why I haven't generated any coins. A little reading has fixed that. I'm also doing the dailies at Daily Bitcoins and a couple others.

I'll start with a question:Is 50Ghash decent?

Thanks!

That sounds pretty decent.  If you are so new, how have you got 50 GHash?

Yeah it's good. You'd get around 14 BTC a day. ($170+ ish)

Actually, that's what guiminer says. I'm personally a little suspicious of it because I'm running solo. Shoot, I'm not even running ATI, or even a really hot card.

I mouse over guiminer icon and it says 51.046 GHash/s. Open guiminer and it says same at bottom of window.

Here it is:

FTFY, was not loading.

From that image only, I can tell you're mining solo on the bitcoin rpc port with network difficulty 1. So you probably have to wait a bit more and synch the blockchain first. The value is obviously an error from guiminer Smiley

More info from guiminer. Does this help?

Open up your Bitcoin client and let the blockchain become in sync with the rest of the network.
It will load for a while (an hour maybe), just leave it open. That should solve your problems.

OK, guiminer is the client, correct? Or... Is it just a front end for poclbm?

I double-click poclbm.exe and it opens and closes. I navigate to the directory on the command line and it errors out. There are about eight missing Python files.

I'm not sure, I have not tried guiminer.
If you open it, does it have a % loaded (syncing blockchain)?

If not, idk.

What client do you use? I'm not afraid of command line, if needed.

You have to install the bitcoin-qt client and allow the blockchain to sync fully before you can mine solo. If you're new at this, I would recommend mining with a pool. Solo mining is very ineffective unless you really do have multi-gigahash. Start with guiminer and poclbm on a pool, like Bitminter, or use bitminter's built in client. (It's about as efficient as guiminer.) When you feel like you have a better grasp of how bitcoin works, move up to a more advanced, configurable command-line client. For example, I get ~270 mhs with poclbm on guiminer, and I get ~300 mhs with a tweaked Phoenix miner. Bitcoin mining is quite daunting at first, but easy once you get past the learning curve. It helps is you know a bit of python and can write some scripts to automate the process a bit.

OK, I'm following your advice, Kontakt. One thing I read is that I'll be better off as part of a pool. I'm guessing there's a board on here about the different pools?

Tried two different pools. I'm currently connected to slush. Instead of 50 Ghash, I'm getting 21 MHash.  Tongue
