I'm currently experimenting with basic mining (sha-256 and scrypt in the near future)... i already know i'm never going to make ROI, but i don't really care, as long as i can buy some cheap stuff to play with (even tough i'm willing to spend some BTC for some cheap mining equipment, the fact that i'll never ROI does make me price consience)...

I have 2 U2's, my 2 Gridseeds are currently in shipping, and i would like to buy 1 or 2 GekkoScience Compac 8-16 GH/s's when they're available @ bitshopper.

I'm running an old HP thin client to run the mining software, which seems to provide enough power for the 2 antminer U2's. But when i buy 2 extra sticks, i'm afraid my current setup won't do anymore...

After browsing for a powed usb hub, i found this one:
http://www.dx.com/p/7-port-usb-2-0-hub-w-individual-switch-ac-power-adapter-black-380660#.Vb58l2CGqgo

can anybody shed some light wether or not this one would be sufficient? The geccoscience sticks would use 6W per usb port, the antminers use 2W, and the gridseeds have their own power supply...

the current output of the hub is 500mA (usb 2.0)...

Although the USB hub's description is not specific enough I am assuming it can provide 500mA for each of the 7 ports totalling in 3.5A. So a single port can draw 5 V * 0.5 A = 2.5 W. This is most likely sufficient for your antminers 2 W power consumption, although I am not sure if they need a bit more at startup as I don't own any of these.

With the geccoscience miner and its 6 W power consumption you would have problems. Generally a USB socket can provide up to 1 A (more for device charging) meaning 5 V * 1 A = 5 W. With a USB Y cable you can theoretically draw power from 2 separate ports that would give you more than the needed 6 W. However, since the USB hub you looked at only provides 0.5 A per port, this wouldn't work. Wit a Y cable you could only get 1 A, meaning 5 W.

You can try an adapter like this one http://www.dx.com/p/4-port-high-speed-usb-2-0-power-adapter-charger-hub-w-switch-led-indicator-black-eu-plug-393722#.Vb6FbF2ljQp or similar.
This one has only 4 ports, 2 of them 1 A and 2 of them 2 A. The 1 A ports could be used for the antminers and the 2 A ports for the geccoscience.

At least that one has one with a coloured cable band on it to show it is for power and the other one is data.

The other linked one does not and i have a sneaking suspicion it may have both as data throughput, so one HAS to be connected to only power output!

when I get them I will post how they work as I can no longer get these below

these are very good and have allowed me 1.1 amps with no worries

I'll research those links before buying a hub!
