Dubai, the Gulf emirate known for extravagant projects and scorching temperatures, has announced it will build the world’s largest indoor ski resort, with a 1.2-kilometre run.

Dubai’s current indoor ski resort, opened in 2005 in the Mall of the Emirates, remains the largest in the world, according to the Guinness World Records website, boasting a 400-metre slope.

The slope runs year-round despite summer temperatures in Dubai that can top 45C (113F).

The new covered ski resort comes as part of a scheme dubbed Meydan One, also to include the world’s tallest residential tower at 711metres (2,333ft), a dancing fountain sweeping up to 420m (1,378ft), a vast shopping centre, 350-room hotel and marina, according to a government statement.

This will be their second indoor skiing slope. It's funny that they now have enough ski areas for people to make Dubai an option for their ski trips!

I've skied at Ski Dubai, it was cool. The snow was a bit slushy, they have two main runs, one "groomed" and the other moguls. It was good...it worked...there was even a chalet style lounge at the bottom to enjoy the apres scene.

May be. But only idiots will spend money like this. The oil money will not last for an infinite period of time. Right now, the price of Brent Crude is $49 per barrel, which is down from $110 in 2014. The Arab population is increasing, and it is doubling every 15 or 20 years. These people need to save some money for the future generations, rather than wasting it in building indoor ski slopes.

They know it, their oil is not going to last more than 100 years. They are futureproofing the economy by turning it into a tourism hotspot. Tourism is already playing a major role in Dubai's economy. As the country has no natural beauty or pleasant weather, man made attractions are only what they are relying on

I guess they're looking fro local customers only. As an European, I would never think of Dubai as of Dubai as a place to go skiing. The Alps are better, and they're just natural. I wouldn't be able to enjoy skiing indoor, and when going out facing the scorching heat they have in Dubai. Skiing is more than a sport, it's also an atmosphere.

I used to be a citizen and a taxpayer. Those days are long gone.

"Wasting" it building indoor ski slopes is not a waste at all. They're building a tourist destination and retooling the economy to be based on tourism instead of oil. This is exactly what they need to be doing, as thee oil is finite. The added benefit of appealing to tourists is that it will require moderacy in the Middle East because instability is a death knell for tourism.
