Hi there!

I'm excited to share Compute for Humanity (ComputeForHumanity.org), a program that lets you mine altcoins for charity. It flips just about every assumption about cryptocurrency mining on its head:

  • Mining isn't just for geeks—anyone can do it. Literally. One of our users is a woman in her mid-nineties who installed it herself.
  • Mining doesn't have to be hard on your computer. In fact, it can be so gentle that you don't even notice it's happening. In the background. While you surf the web. On—heresy, I know—your Mac.
  • Instead of increasing hashing power with better hardware, hashing power can be increased by crowdsourcing.
  • Mining doesn't have to be done selfishly. It can be done for good causes!

This project isn't trying to compete with the big mining collectives. It's trying to increase cryptocurrency awareness, raise money for good causes, and change what it means to be a miner.

You can also show your support by donating to 1CkZ4233SfQnMyjwypcN1YZorG15VCAPAH. Anything sent to that address will be donated to charity.

Let me know what you think!

Once a transaction has 6 confirmations, it is extremely unlikely that an attacker without at least 50% of the network's computation power would be able to reverse it.

Great questions. The charities are listed on the website (ComputeForHumanity.org/details), along with a complete history of all transactions (ComputeForHumanity.org/financials). For now the project is just focused on gaining users, and once money is being raised more quickly we'll focus on broadening the number and type of nonprofits involved.

Thanks for the interest!
