Suspected traffickers arrested by Italian police after boat tragedy allegedly threatened those on board with knives and beat them with belts

ive men have been charged with multiple counts of murder by Italian authorities after survivors named them as the traffickers in charge of a vessel that capsized in the Mediterranean, killing an estimated 200 people.

According to witness accounts gathered by police, the suspected traffickers – two Libyans, two Algerians and a Tunisian aged 21 to 24 – threatened the migrants on board with knives and beat them with belts to control them.

About 100 African migrants now presumed dead were allegedly held in the hull of the doomed boat, survivors told police. The traffickers allegedly said those passengers, who had paid less for their crossing than others, could be kept there for three days. When the hull started filling with water, the traffickers beat them back and ordered other passengers to sit on the hatch of the hull to stop them getting out.

This is why the EU needs comprehensive migration reform. The current system involves migrants dangerously crossing the Mediterranean, landing in a EU country, and then being passed around until they end up in Sweden or Britain. Europeans don't want them, why can't the EU see that?

Thousands, if not tens of thousands will die in the Mediterranean, if the EU doesn't stop attracting these Sub-Saharan migrants by providing them with on-arrival asylum status and benefits worth $500 per month for each migrant. What the EU needs to do is to send back these migrants, so that these people will stay in Africa. The population of Sub Saharan Africa is almost three times that of the EU. It is not possible to bring all the Sub Saharan to the European Union.

Europe should send NATO to the african countries of origin. Arrest those corrupt leaders. Coloise those countries for a couple years so corruption is eliminated and until the economy has recovered. Then those people won't have a reason to leave. then NATO can slowly give those countries back to the people.

It's time to crack down on human traffickers. However these guys seems to me too young to be the real bosses in such an enterprise. Running this kind of business needs places to shelter the migrants, food and water supplies, workplaces for the migrants, agents who are directing the migrants to these guys, so a lot of organization and widespread network of people. So I think these five people are only some small fry.

NATO can take action against the human smugglers, but it wont be ethical to invade those Sub Saharan nations. Many of these nations are having democratically elected governments. NATO has no right to topple them. Perhaps a better idea would be to make contraception available to the people living in these countries, so that the population explosion slows down.

the problem with that is that it will take years before you see something. Europe needs to act NOW! The problems lies with those countries of origin Europe must do something. Because doing nothing will make thing worse not only for us europeans but also for these immigrants. Also in a couple months it will be winter. I expect a very hot winter.

As a first step, the Europeans can deport these illegal migrants back to their own places of birth. If that is not possible (since these migrants destroy their passports and other documents once they reach the European continent), they can be detained in some isolated island which is far away from the major European cities.
