So i wondered how secure it is to verify the ownership of an account by signing a message with an old posted bitcoin address. Now i thought that, when you edit a post, the post will have a short line under the post that states "This post was edited on... something". But nothing like that happens.

So this sounds like a serious problem to me. If we want to be signatures worth something then we would need such a "edited-info". Otherwise a hacker could go, edit an old post that wasnt quoted in the thread, and insert a bitcoin address he owns. Voila, he is the legit owner since ages.

So am i overlooking something or that really a risk? If so i would want to ask for enabling this notice.

Edit: Test

Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

Do you mean a sort of Log? It would be good idea.

If the 'hacker' edits an old post ... it will not be a problem (due the short line under the post - the notify edit). So it should not be considered as valid proof.

it does happen. it just doesn't appear if you edit your post right after you post it (forgot the timeframe exactly)

also you can PM your address to the DefaultTrust account and save/remember the PM ID, you know.

edit:ed 7 minutes after I posted. want to see if something happens.

You have a 10 minute "grace period" to edit your posts before the dotted line shows up. If you edit your post after more then 10 minutes from when you create your post (and save the edit), then the dotted line will show up with the time the post was last edited and who edited the post

Hm. I tried editing the OP but i see definitely no Line that states that the post was edited. The post of shorena doesn't show it for me either. I now checked in chrome and still nothing. Guess i need to check the forum options to see if there is some option disabling it. Though i can't imagine why i should have disabled that option. Oo

I'm checking now where this could come from.

Edit: No, i can't find such option, maybe it's named in a way i don't recognize it?

Since it is with both of my browsers it can't be an extension. I can't see the edit notes on other accounts too so it is not a legendary thing or something like that.

Anyone has an explaination?

have you tried hovering your pointer over the date of the post? it should show something like "last edited [date] by [user]". it doesn't show right away, btw.

*lol* Of course i did not get the idea to do this since i was used to see a small line under the post text stating the edit.

Well, sorry for the confusion. Tongue

Oh, but another thing i wanted to state, that i became aware of when speaking with a user wanting to deal accounts, is that someone could scam with that. For example having a sr. member account that had a posted address from the beginning. Then post a new address and delete the first one. Then sell the account with a signature for the new address and using a new username.

He might have found a good poster so that the account gets more valueable. Then, after some time, contacting theymos, claiming that the account was hacked and that the address to proof this was deleted. I guess badbear could revive that post and the owner could proof ownership with a way older address.

Im not sure how far this scenario is away from the reality.

Proving you own the account by signing an address from a new or recent post is worthless, that's why people ask for an old address from an unedited post.
