Maker insures and earns income from the collateralized debt of the Dai Credit System. Maker transfers this income to the 1,000,000* Makercoin by continuously buying and burning supply over time. This results in a steadily decreasing supply, and a steadily increasing price. * The initial MKR supply is 1,000,000. It decreases over time.

You'll have to read the Dai white paper to understand what that means...

Due to its function as insuring asset of the Dai Credit System, Makercoins earn an income which initially sits at 2% of the value of all outstanding Dai Bonds (USD pegged stablecoin). This gives makercoin an intrinsic value equal to the Net Present Value of the projected future cash flows generated by the outstanding Dai. Because they are an insuring asset, Makercoin carry incredible risk. They are vulnerable to forced inflation if a Dai collateral asset suffers a catastrophic crash - a so called black swan event (an example is ether or bitcoin crashing with more than 30% in a few minutes). The insurance rate (initially 2%) can be autonomously varied over time to compensate for serious losses, and Makercoin owners are able to govern the debt ceilings (and thus risk) using a simplified futarchy.

The Maker, autonomous bank & market maker contract system will deploy to the Ethereum blockchain early next year. It is an open source contract system that deploys Maker to fulfill the functions specified in the Dai white paper. The Nexus development dynasty raises funds to help speed up development of Maker, but takes no responsibility for its performance once deployed, and are not entering into any contract when selling off Makercoins (meaning: do full due diligence on everything before you consider buying. This is an extremely high risk asset.)

Deployment time of coin contract is announced tomorrow in this thread and on our forum. It will be within one month, but we need to do some final testing so we are confident we will be able to commit to the deadline we announce. This contract will give Makercoin full coin functionality, like bitcoin. Before the contract is deployed, you can still trade MKR for BTC using our forums accounting.

Release date of Maker is early next year (current best estimate). Other modules will come intermittently, including Maker CFD's (decentralized leveraged trading and USD hedging using ether) and a soon-to-be-announced whitelisted fiat (USD/GDP/EUR) gateway that can be used as an onramp for MKR (and eventually Dai).

Have been looking for this topic for some time. Just checked DAI at Gate.io, but the trading volume isn't that high. You make a slight loss when using DAI as intermediate or safe storage during a drop, not as much as the price of ETH and BTC drop btw, but more than when you would use USDT. It might proof to be useful if more people start using that and the coin starts showing off by maintaining a resistance against fluctuation.
