Where does XE get this price? I told my friends that it's impossible to get that price from an exchange.

They probably take a 24 hour average from some exchange. Perhaps Bitstamp.

What do you mean "impossible to get that price from an exchange", to retrieve that value? (through an API) or you mean to "get that price" as in, selling bitcoins and actually receiving that amount?

First: yes that's possible, most exchanges have an API.
Second: depends, typically the average price of the past 24 hours will not be exactly the same as what you're paying or getting now. It also largely depends on the volume you want to trade.

In theory, there's no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Well, the rate happens to be exactly what it is on Bitstamp right now. But for what it's worth, http://www.xe.com/faq/rates_buyorsellrates.php (they use mid-market rates).

they indeed do seem to use bitstamp. but i would prefer it if they used the average price of several large exchanges like coindesk is doing.
