There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, which will follow the rules of the network no matter what miners do. Even if every miner decided to create 1000 bitcoins per block, full nodes would stick to the rules and reject those blocks.

This is actually pretty cool. And super simple.

Are there any insights into how the payment model will look like? As in, who gets paid (I assume those providing storage and delegates), by which metric and so on.

If you are a developer. Shift seems to have a great technology that will give users the ability to create their own "daps", according to the company.
This means that if you are not a developer, then you can get a better investment for yourself. Because of this, if you are a developer and you are interested in this company, keep an eye on it. You will probably achieve a good result by using this technology or by investing in it when the ICO is available.

Shift is not developed by a company..it's developed by a international team of independent developers (most of them are from Netherlands? I'm not sure about that, can somebody check that?). Also, they never had a ICO and they will never have it! So, basically Shift will not have any problems with US exchanges because Shift isn't a security. Smiley

But, yeah if you want to help develop the project everyone is welcome. Smiley

Development Update
By Shift Team in Newsletter on Aug 14, 2018

As the members of Shift’s development team have been hard at work and made much progress during these last few weeks, we thought it time to provide an explanation of the advancements they’ve made in relation to our Q3 goal of deploying a fully functional decentralized storage solution onto the Shift testnet. To refresh your memory, and for those of you who are new to our community, meeting this goal requires the completion of two integral components. Firstly, the release of our very own, custom-built IPFS Cluster Pin Manager. Secondly, the integration of the Shift Cluster with the testnet mainchain, enabling a decentralized governance system tasked with managing storage resources in a trustless fashion. The result of accomplishing these two tasks, once combined, will be a first-of-its-kind decentralized storage solution. https://www.shiftproject.com/news/news-item/10

So, here's something I've been wondering about for some time now:

Shift uses IPFS, which is good, because it is a good and proven protocol. Also, other projects use it, which makes switching between them very easy from the storage providers perspective. Decent is planning to use it, so is Lisk and obviously they have their own coin called filecoin, although that hasn't launched yet.

This creates quite a lot of competition, doesn't it. Just like Whattomine and Nicehash, there will most likely be some type of interchange on the providers side. Granted, it is not as easy and fast, since syncing up to the new network will probably take some time, but still: there is a chance that IPFS storage will not be as abundantly available as we think it might be.

The truth of the matter is that there is no way in hell that it will be profitable for an average user to rent out their spare 200 GB, or, to be more precise, even if it was marginally profitable, the economical incentive to provide that space for a one or low two digit earning per month doesn't line up. Instead, serverfarms will provide that storage. It kinda sounds like the old system, bt it's a bit better, since the built-in redundancy still keeps the system as a whole decantralized enough to prevent censorship, deletion of data and all that bad stuff, provided it is done correctly.

Now, here's my point now: If we assume that IPFS is the future of online/cloud storage, Shift will have to compete with a lot of other projects. Not so much on the  user side (for now), but on the provider side. Storage providers won't care whether they provide for Shifts websites or Decents cat videos (not that I think Decent is going anywhere, but that's a different story). And while we can assume that due to the overall sluggishness of the changing process, as well as the power of the free market, this will be somewhat mitigated, this might still be of significant impact, maybe even in a way that is somewhat comparable to the threats smaller GPU mined PoW currencies face today. Especially if some big players emerge, we could see some type of agglomeration with providers and ultimately users (due to higher liquidity and stability) tending towards few projects, possibly making the smaller projects less stable.

I don't really have a concise conclusion or anything, but I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Will they try to compete with storage solutions already in place like STORJ and SIACOIN?

If I am reading their site correctly, do users lend out their hard drive on the SHIFT network so that people can host their websites on another person's hard drive?

Is it possible to offer bandwidth to people that want a significant amount for their website? I know bandwidth is very expensive and if we can decentralize that, that would be a game changer!

Well, technically, they are all storage solutions fighting for the same market of storage providers. However, there are some differences: as far as I know, Sia and Storj don't use IPFS, but have their own protocols, which might make interchanging a little fidgetty.

Secondly, Shift is focussed on storage for websites, which is a very different vector than, say backups or your personal dropbox. Storage providers for Shift will get a lot more traffic, since it's not only you getting some files in and out, but visitors wanting to look at your website.

I'm not sure whether Sia and Storj (or Filecoin, for that matter) are working on webhosting solutions, but this is a very different animal due to traffic. As a provider, you'd need a much more resilient infrastructure, or you'd need way more redundancy in the system as a whole, as well as a good mechanic to prevent some nodes from getting all the traffic and others getting almost none.

What are the differences between Shift and ZeroNet ?

See: https://github.com/HelloZeroNet/ZeroNet/blob/master/README.md for zeronet information

and https://www.shiftnrg.org/faq

The information provided in both of those links, after being both read and understood will give you a far better understanding of differences than anyone can tell you in this thread.

By Shift Team in Newsletter on Aug 19, 2018
https://www.shiftproject.com/news/news-item/11

In late-2016, for the sake of mitigating the Shift blockchain’s vulnerability to a hashrate attack, the Shift Team made the important decision to port the platform from Ethereum’s Proof-of-Work (PoW) algorithm, to Lisk’s Delegated-Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) system. That decision proved to be the correct one, with it resulting in the more stable ecosystem in which to conduct the task of building a decentralized storage and web hosting solution that we enjoy today. However, while it came with many advantages, that decision also meant adopting a fledgling delegation system with much room for improvement. Seeking to revolutionize the underlying design, a major ambition of the Shift Team is the creation of a new consensus algorithm that will solve many of the problems that participants in a variety of DPoS projects have raised. The team believes, however, that the completion of this new and innovative consensus algorithm should not come at the expense of releasing a fully functioning product at the earliest opportunity. For that reason, in order to provide a means of encouraging the current delegation system to be the best that it can be, we would like to lend our support to a Shift Vote Day, an instance in which we, as a community of individuals devoted to bettering the Shift ecosystem, can collaboratively work towards ensuring that those 101 delegates tasked with the responsibility of securing the blockchain, maintain a consistent devotion to the integrity of the project.
