Wind is expensive. At current coal prices, especially for dirtier types, it's hard to compete. Large scale fission reactors and hydro dams are also still cheaper. Some theoretical solar also could crush wind.

I'd probably say fusion, anti-matter and magic have it beaten hands down.

The truth is finding cheap electricity from a provider is the best.   Wind/Solar both just cost to much to justify for mining.

Your talking about a lot of equipment including a lot of batteries depending on how many miners.    But the ones who follow the cheap electricity vs trying to do solar/wind are the ones who win.

i always wonder, if someone know, how efficient is the classic mills near the river, for generating electricity

if someone has the possibility to do it because he does not leave in a city, it should go for it

Are you talking about the small scale ones that stuck out of the side of sold old houses?

If so not very efficient.   They were all pretty simple with gears and water let the end turn to do something.   But compare it to todays hydro and it's not going to compare at all.

Just like old wind mills really. They are good for turning something or making a pump for a well or something.  But again not geared for power.

i think this always depends, for example, on a country where there is not so much wind, it will not be the most efficient energy power, but maybe there solar is better.

I really think that the best thing someone can do is to use everything that he can use, that way, even if there is low power coming from wind, he can compensate that with solar for example.

solar is pretty cheap if you only run in the day and don't use batteries.

The panels  and inverter last a long time.   So for the right person solar can work.  A farm with an old large chicken coop would be ideal.  this shape below, but longer.

If you have cheap power run on the grid in the night and on the solar in the day.

OP asked about efficiency, not cost.

how do you measure efficiency without using cost per kwatt as part of your measurements.

I know you can say the amount of wind speed needed to spin a turbine /windmill is x and the amount of power from the spin is ½x thus the efficiency is 50%

Ultimately  it still boils down to cost per kwatt.

Lets say 1 therm of natural gas can do  4x btu used to make steam to turn a turbine  and the conversion to kwatts is 10 percent

less efficient then a wind mill turbine.

whos cares if the therm of gas is 1 penny

and the cost to build the windmill turbine is 100 thousand dollars.

it could take a long time decades for the windmill to make up its cost to build
