Anonymity was not an option with Ashley Madison. You have to use your real information, else you can't date. And I am not sure whether they accepted anonymous methods of payments such as prepaid Visa cards and Bitcoin. Anyway... most of the people were uploading their real photos and videos to the site. Seems like they were not that bothered about privacy as well.

Yes the digital age makes it easier to hook up with one another but would you really want a paper or digital trail for something that could affect your marriage? Your identity is also compromised which is also another worry too

People are the worst. An unknown number of assholes are threatening to expose Ashley Madison users, presumably ruining their marriages. The hacking victims must pay the extortionists “exactly 1.0000001 Bitcoins” or the spouse gets notified. Ugh.

It was only a matter of time, someone elses hack is a treasure trove of data to comb through and information to gather.
Add in a few other hacks (Targets webhack etc.) a list of names and profiles then combine the databases and look for matches to a Visa number and poof credit card fraud and identity theft become a lot easier.

I did find it amusing though that paying to delete a name from the Ashley Madison database did not do a lot, the feds will have a fun time looking at peoples dirty laundry I guess, not really a NSA related topic but as an extension that database is free for downloading and adding to their data coffers.

Not only that, AM were charging something like $20 to users who wanted their accounts closed and info deleted, unbelievable that thousands of people were dumb enough to use their own government email address (I saw at least 20-30 gov.uk accounts)

Users were paying $19 each to get their profiles deleted. But Ashley Madison didn't deleted their profiles. They just made these profiles hidden (invisible to the other users). Had they deleted those profiles, then this leak would not have caused any serious damage.

And you are upset that there were a few dozen profiles from the UK government staff? Cool down. The staff in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security alone created some 45 profiles.

There are services where you can get a .gov.uk email account. They are worth something in the black hat seo scene because they are trustworthy. So i wonder how many of these users really were employed by the state.

Somehow awaitable that they only hid the accounts. It's not so easy to delete data and you would need to add some coding to have this functionality.

What i wonder is if these users can sue Ashley Madison since they did not what they were paid for and it might mean that someone, at least in the US, might sue them for an expensive divorce or something like that. I guess the right lawyer can convice the court that the damage directly resulted from that and would have not happened without the hack.

I'm not 100% sure on this but I read an article saying anyone could register using an email as there was no confirmation procedure so if you had someones email you could do it, though I'm sure most are legit. One thing I don't understand though is you think people wouldn't be dumb enough to use their work or government email. Most gov emails are likely monitored for a start. I agree it's their own fault about ruining marriages etc. It wasn't the leak that did that but the people who cheated.

Individuals suing Ashley Madison for last year’s hack that revealed their identities online will not be able to remain anonymous during the trial, a federal judge has ruled.

Forty-two plaintiffs are bringing a proposed class-action suit against the extramartial-affair dating website for not fulfilling its “full delete” promise, which was supposed to wipe every last bit of data on a user for a fee of $19. The litigation also is looking to sue Avid Life Media, the website operator behind Ashley Madison, for possibly creating phony profiles of women to attract sign-ups, Ars Technica reported. Both issues were raised when a massive hack made public the identities of more than 30 million users and exposed that the site might be engaging in fraudulent practices.
