Well really there are many out there. It depends on your preferences and habits. Normally you want the exchange with the most volume. Of the top of my head, this might be btc-e. But here is the link so you can check and chose for yourself.

http://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/litecoin/#markets

If I was you, I would stay away from Cryptsy and BTER. They are very shady.

Why not just use https://shapeshift.io/# ?

It could not be easier, you just send the BTC/LTC to a address they give you, provide an address where the converted coins must be sent to and that's that. You wait a couple of seconds/minutes and the transaction is done. It really cannot be easier and their rates are very competitive.

Its quick, its easy and no need to open accounts and the like.

I prefer shapeshift for exchanges to be honest. no account or other things needed. fees are a little bit higher, but that's fine for me

I tend to like Bittrex for altcoins to Bitcoin.  Although try using it on your desktop as trying to use the mobile version is quite frustrating.

My personal favourite is Poloniex. I have tried many sites but Poloniex seems different from other sites to me.

I use Cryptsy and Poloniex. I have yet to have my bad experiences with Cryptsy, look at the feedback regarding cryptsy floating around the forum, it's not that positive, but I'm going well with them so far. Poloniex is good. Nothing more to say.

If you're looking for quick and painless trades, look at https://bitin.io/.

The best site for LTC/BTC trade is Btc-e.com. I'm surprised to see that no-one mention it yet. I don't really get why people suggest you low volume, untrusted sites. Btc-e is your best bet.

Shapeshift simply because you don't need to register to use the service.

Exactly this, and it literally takes seconds to complete the whole process and it's way faster than any other traditional exchanges, although you might be able to get a little better rate but if you don't care about minor difference in conversion rate and you don't have a lot of time to log-in to an exchange and complete the process than shapeshift.io is the best there is. But if it was not available for some reason then I would use Bittrex, I have used it from a long time and it has never put me down.

It's the most popular exchange around here. We use its rates as analysis. Seriously this thread surprised me. When talking about LTC/BTC exchanges Btc-e should be mentioned first, otherwise not acceptable.

Agreed BTC-e is a great exchange and is the best for LTC volume. Shapeshift.io for small volume works amazingly well. Also people will say that BTCe is some how shady - all exchanges are shady, but I actually trust BTCe over most.

if you just want to exchange your litecoin to bitcoin and be done with it use shapeshift but for trading any sort of altcoin i prefer bittrex because it is fast and easy and also has a decent volume.

I agree! People say people behind BTC-e are anonymous and hence, we can't do anything if they steal. So they are less trustable. However, I don't understand how revealing personal information makes someone more trustable than an anonymous person, at least, history says so!

There is no best.  Try using all the popular exchanges and decide what you like.  I use coinbase for buying btc, okcoin for trading bitcoin/litecoin futures, bittrex & poloniex for shitcoins.
