The melancholy billionaire: Minecraft creator unhappy with his sudden wealth

You might think the developer of Minecraft, who sold his video game to Microsoft for $2.5 billion, would be living the dream.

But according to a series of tweets over the weekend, Marcus "Notch" Persson is pretty unhappy with his life and his huge wealth.

Persson sold his wildly popular game a year ago. Since then he bought a 23,000-square-foot mansion in Beverly Hills for $70 million, reportedly outbidding Beyonce and Jay Z. But even those ultra-luxury digs aren't enough to make him happy.

"The problem with getting everything is you run out of reasons to keep trying, and human interaction becomes impossible due to imbalance," he wrote at the start of series of tweets.

His depression apparently struck a cord with the twitterverse. Nearly 1,400 people retweeted that first tweet, and 2,200 favorited it.

The problem with getting everything is you run out of reasons to keep trying, and human interaction becomes impossible due to imbalance.
    — Markus Persson (@notch) August 29, 2015

But Persson wasn't done there. He followed with tweets about never feeling more isolated.

Hanging out in ibiza with a bunch of friends and partying with famous people, able to do whatever I want, and I've never felt more isolated.
    — Markus Persson (@notch) August 29, 2015

Part of the isolation apparently comes from having nothing to do, just sitting around waiting for friends and family.

In sweden, I will sit around and wait for my friends with jobs and families to have time to do shit, watching my reflection in the monitor.
    — Markus Persson (@notch) August 29, 2015

Persson feels unappreciated by the workers at his former company, who he said he made sure were taken care of in the sale to Microsoft (MSFT, Tech30).

When we sold the company, the biggest effort went into making sure the employees got taken care of, and they all hate me now.
    — Markus Persson (@notch) August 29, 2015

And apparently part of his loneliness comes from not being able to date the woman he would like to, because of his wealth. She apparently wanted to date a "normal person."

Found a great girl, but she's afraid of me and my life style and went with a normal person instead.
    — Markus Persson (@notch) August 29, 2015

Some people suggested he follow the example of Elon Musk, who took the fortune he made from selling his stake in PayPal (PYPL, Tech30) to eBay (EBAY) and used it to start businesses he was passionate about. Musk, of course, launched Tesla Motors (TSLA), which is trying to combat global warming by developing an affordable electric car, and SpaceX, which is trying to create an affordable rocket to take people to Mars. But Persson rejected the idea of such visionary efforts.

The tweets brought encouragement from some others who had enjoyed sudden success, although maybe not actual billions. It also brought offers from people who said they'd be willing to hang out with Persson and be his friend. He said he appreciated all the offers and reassurances.

People who made sudden success are telling me this is normal and will pass. That's good to know! I guess I'll take a shower then!
    — Markus Persson (@notch) August 29, 2015

And just venting and not feeling like I had to hide made it feel a bit easier to cope with already. ❤
    — Markus Persson (@notch) August 29, 2015

And when one person tweeted him about his regretting the sale to Microsoft, he responded early Monday that "selling out was the best thing I ever did."

@plankzt You're completely wrong. Selling out was the best thing I ever did.
    — Markus Persson (@notch) August 31, 2015

He seemed to be taking a more positive view of things in his tweets Monday morning, saying he was having a nice day. And he mocked news reports about the tone of his melancholy tweets over the weekend.

fwiw, while there are articles about my depression because I had a bad day and vented on a trend I saw, I'm sitting here having a nice day.
    — Markus Persson (@notch) August 31, 2015

It's a problem I can understand. Once you have that much money, how do you find people that like you for YOU and not for what you have? The motives of every person that wants to be your friend suddenly become suspect. It's not like you can't find real friendship, but it would be surprisingly difficult.

He could hire me as his personal entertainer. For a decent pay I'd make sure he doesn't feel lonely.  Grin

Looks like there's a demand for paid friends these days.

Has he tried a sex change, "everyone" is doing it these days?
Seriously, he should start other companies similar to what the guy from Paypal did.

Not everyone can be Elon Musk. Minecraft was never set to change the world or make people be more creative.
Google the dude who invented Winamp, how much money he made selling it to AOL and if he is bored today. He is not. He is coding everyday...

Some people have one type of worries and some the other. I´d like to belong to the first group though. If he doesn´t like it he can give this to the poor(or even better, to me  Wink). He shouldn´t even be sharing feelings like that.

Its a view few of us can understand, but it does not mean it should not be discussed. It actually should be discussed  more, since people spend their whole lives chasing money and never get there. Here we see time and time again, people are unhappy once they get to the top. Its not for every one and it sometimes amplifies the problems in your life already. Believe there is a stat out there about lottery winners going broke in the first five years. Its really about self worth.

He will get used to it. No problem.
That must be tirering to handle every demands like the cousin you've never met and suddenly asks for 100 000$ : "Come on it's like 100$ for you !!" Grin
Anyway, being away from the rat race can be depressing... Interesting !

Is this to be like mom and dad and have some braclet to track you! Off topic but I was thinking about it and I am also on my 6th coffee. Wink

Looks like he is having fun:
Some of Frankel's current projects in development (according to his weblog) are a programmable effects processor called Jesusonic and a new piece of software named NINJAM which allows several musicians to make music together via the Internet.

Under his new company, Cockos, he has been developing REAPER, a multi-track audio and MIDI sequencer for Windows and Mac OS X, with a version for Linux in beta. The program has been developed using a release system wherein Frankel releases a new revision of the software approximately every 2 to 3 days. ~source

It's nice there were people out there to support him there.
It would be cool to have another Elon Musk developing the forefront of the future or for him to use his money to literally BUILD just like in Minecraft a better society and improve the well being of others.

This reminds me of Brooks Hatlen from Shawshank Redemption and Red's little speech about him being institutionalized. Brooks too didn't know what to do with his freedom when he finally got out after nearly 50 years inside. Persson doesn't look like someone who will resort to cocaine (or suicide) to cure his depression so he should be fine  Smiley

Not everyone can be Elon Musk.

You can as long as you have billions of dollars and a willingness to appear on television.  He is technically another reality TV billionaire like Donald Trump and Mark Cuban.

With so much money I would have financed a project for a 3D printing platform so people could create real homes like in the game. Even trees...

Give everything away. Problem solved.

He is never going to do that. Statements such as this one are solely for publicity purposes. I have seen people making similar statements earlier as well. But none of them would donate a single penny for charity purposes. They don't need to, as IMO, they have worked hard to earn their wealth. But should have stayed out of these cheap publicity stunts.
