You would be better off mining with an abacus.

I tried CPU mining for litecoins, didn't really work out... I was considering in my next rig doing GPUs and also doing a AMD and mining with the APU. Right now I just have some super cheap celerons in my 2 rigs...

I did play with the thought of mining, but never really got round to it and just invested in coins instead.

Martin.

I'm doing it on my laptop just to test how everything works (for a few days) before I look into getting high level GPU rigs since I'm just starting out. I think I get around 40kh/s mining Litecoins which isn't good but I have my laptop running anyway. When I figure out how everything works I'll switch to a GPU rig.

And why not GPU + CPU?

If I ever decided to set up a Litecoin rig, I would build a GPU rig.

Martin.

Not only is CPU mining illogical, it's near impossible for a newbie. I tried to set it up just for a laugh, and I couldn't even figure out how to get it going without a GPU (which I don't have) and gave up after a short while. I'm sure I *could* get it going, but it definitely has been made very tough to do for a newbie - if you're savvy enough to get it working, you are DEF savvy enough to realize it's not profitable, which is a good thing, will save people time and money.

with a good CPU and litecoins AND free electricity it might be worth it.  Best to spring for a GPU though at any rate.

I'm a newbie and I'm cpumining LTC and FTC. It took me a couple hours to figure it out but it's working !
Ok I'm waiting for a GPU now but I learned many things trying to make it work.

...realize it's not profitable...
I earned 0.003 LTC and 0.04 FTC Cheesy

Pretty much... I mean electricity is marginal where I live. CPU mining, as posted before, just isn't viable anymore. Sad

CPU bitcoin mining is not viable long time ago...

Still, may be you can give a try to alternative scrypt-based cryptocoins if you have access to a good bunch of cores and you don't pay the power bill.

So from this thread I gather that CPU mining is basically useless nowadays..

I am guessing those people with AMD's APUs would still be - they get ~100mH/s because of the IGP. Or people who don't have a good GPU.
