Bitcoin miner runs the ultimate shoestring facility

Some people refer to data centers as “bit barns” - but the facility we visited in Iceland last month meets that description much closer than any other place we have been. A specialized Bitcoin mining facility, the site makes extensive use of plywood and corrugated metal.

"In a nutshell, the network works like a distributed timestamp server, stamping the first transaction to spend a coin. It takes advantage of the nature of information being easy to spread but hard to stifle." -- Satoshi

Interested.  I even picked up a tip via the pictures to improve our facility.  Good read.

What a great way to do a startup.  Heck, you could franchise the things... buy your own turnkey bitcoin mining operation.  Capital expenses are relatively cheap (converting some old buildings - in the case of the article an automotive repair shop).  1.2MW... that's a decent amount of hardware you can power with that... think 1000 S7s - nearly 5PH/s.

Jonny's Pool - Mine with us and help us grow!  Support a pool that supports Bitcoin, not a hardware manufacturer's pockets!  No SPV cheats.  No empty blocks.

It isn't cheap no matter what.  Electrical gear and having it permitted and installed to code so you don't burn down the building is also a significant cost.  What I would say is compared to other options for 1.2MW which would normally cost between $2-4 million, you could get away with this method up to code for around $750-900K minimum.

Is this an expansion of the hosting service recently launched by allinvain? I see it is located in iceland not canada but the name sounded similar. I am not sure though why anyone would take pride in making a cheap quality miner host. If I was going to place an order for tens of thousands of dollars worth of mining equipment I would want it hosted in a place that is high quality not one proudly made of plywood and called "a shoestring facility". Did they also do the electrical work cheaply? Did nobody learn the lesson from last year when that mine in thailand burnt down with millions of dollars in miners damaged?

So they can pass the savings to you.

I rather pay $50 per kwh in an ugly but functional/ safe place then to pay $90 per kwh in a glamorous building with TV/cable, lake front, etc.  Your miners doesn't care as long as it is cool and have enough juice.

Or you can spend $60/Kw with us and get the value and quality infrastructure Smiley

So they can pass the savings to you.

There is a difference between doing things properly and cutting corners to save a few bucks. What might appear to be "savings" up front is actually far greater costs to be paid down the road!

Why pay money to put your expensive mining equipment somewhere it will get damaged and probably given no more care than was put into the building when you can pay about the same to get your gear hosted somewhere things are done properly? Cable tv is a good joke, obviously my miners would not need that but they also don't need to be right beside an open window to get rained on! I have been reading various threads around here and while some places like toom.im still offer 2014 prices of $90+ it looks like there are other hosters offering prices more in the area of $70 so it is not like the only choice people have is between "get ripped off" or "barebones plywood data hut for cheap until the weakest link fails".
