Yesterday I sent .234 btc to a known good address and my bitcoin core v11 wallet shows 95 (and growing) confirmations. When I looked up the transaction number on a couple of chain explorers they all say 'not found'. Is there a simple explanation? Should I be worried??

Blockchain explorers aren't 100% reliable. Can you post the TX ID so a few people can review it?

I'm thinking it's not a transaction until the receiver opens his wallet which he may not have done, if that makes any sense.

The string you linked isn't a TXID, the -000 doesn't belong. However 76665379a21ad11b41524e65eba048df6edca74be432fd537217ded199859611 is. And amounts sent correspond to what you've described in your first post. As for the receiver, nobody needs to open anything to receive transacted Bitcoins. You can send Bitcoin to an address nobody controls and they will end up there anyways. EDIT: https://blockchain.info/tx/76665379a21ad11b41524e65eba048df6edca74be432fd537217ded199859611 on blockchain.info

Thank you guys. Yes it's there now. About that -000 thing, the TXID was copied directly from my wallet. Is this just one of those things I'm supposed to know but don't?

I'm not sure why Bitcoin core would add -000, I haven't used its front end it in years. I recognized that it didn't belong there because TXID can't contain "-".

the -000 has something to do with output numbers, but I'm not entirely sure what it is for. I'm thinking it's not a transaction until the receiver opens his wallet which he may not have done, if that makes any sense.
That doesn't matter. There is no way that any node would know whether the receiver has opened his wallet to see the transaction or not. Everything is recorded in the blockchain, not sent to someone's wallet.

The 000 thing has happenned to me many times with bitcoin core when I don't put enough fees and then the transaction do not broadcast to other nodes correctly.

blockchain is a good site but not perfect, sometimes not 100% accurate, there are more advanced methods to trace tx from qt wallet from rpc console, consult bitcoin wiki if you want to learn more about these things
