just so you know im not looking for apple support, im looking for a way to use "self" support for unlocking an icloud activation screen, if it can even be done?

also it would be nice if you had experience with unlocking thorugh any of those sites, most of the sites seem like scams asking to pay for software

I can point you the way were you can bypass the icloud lock and have your device working again its not a permanent fix but it can help a lot you can use your device same as ever i`ll pm you the link now.

You have few options. First one is to try Doucli, but i'm not sure if its successful or not. If that fails you have to go for IMEI based Icloud unlocking which cost you minimum 100 USD for sure and process so complicated and the success rate is too low.

At&t unlocked my dads iPhone 6 when he bought it from the US. He claimed to pay around $10.. Can't remember. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Did you notice the iCloud ? Its not network unlock which is easy to do.
