Hi everyone!

I am new to bitcoins. Today i tried to transfer money to bitcoin but nothing came to my wallet. So, i downloaded Bitcoin Core and created an address (File-> Receiving addresses->New) Then i went to exchanger to transfer money from credit card to bitcoin. I used the created address and the transaction was finished. However in the end i received nothing on my wallet. Support said the transaction was succesfull. What i did wrong? I am sure that i entered correct address, it is still presented in Receiving addresses.

I could not find any good guides for sending/receiving in Bitcoin Core so decided to ask here. Thanks for help!

upd. oh yeah, maybe it is because my wallet is not yet syncronized? Its written 1 year and 40 weeks behind.

There could be several reaosns why this is happening to you, but regarding the Bitcoin Core:

It takes a while for Bitcoin Core, to sync to the network. The network is quite large now. If you open up Bitcoin Core and look at the bottom when it has opened, it should either show that you've synced with the network, or you are X amount of time away from syncing. This could be years, months, days, hours or minutes. Although, this is highly inaccurate and is just an estimate.

If you are synced, do you mind letting us know what exchange you used, and if you could provide your public address, then we could check whether a transaction has been broadcasted on the network.

Ok, so i am not synced yet (1 year 40 weeks more). But i can see my transaction on blockchain.info already.

Could you post the address you used here? (It's safe to do so, but you shouldn't take my word for it! If you post here, what I'll do is check the address using a block explorer - so, if you don't trust me of the internet with your address, you could do the same).

Whatever you decide - bookmark this! https://btc.blockr.io Tools like this are incredibly useful for checking on transactions - every time I send or receive bitcoins I use this.

Then, you are fine. If you can see the transaction on the network, via blockchain.info or any other explorer, then you have nothing to worry about. Once Bitcoin Core has synced with the network, you will see the incoming transaction.

Check the bottom it should say X weeks/months/years behind or your balance would say out of sync. To see the full amount, you need the client to be fully synchronized. If you doubt your exchanger, extract your address and go to blockchain explorers like blocktrail.com/btc to check your address balance. You can go to HELP>DEBUGWINDOW>CONSOLE and use
Code:
dumpprivkey "Address here"
to extract your private key. You can then import it into any SPV clients like multibit. SPV clients are much faster than Bitcoin Core when synchronizing and takes up less space.

Uh, ok, so i will then wait for it to sync. I am still on 1 year and 36 weeks more and it is already 15.4 gb. Grin Is there any other wallet what needs to sync less? What is the capacity of full database? 100gb?

i think the blockchain is somewhere above 40 GB's now, but if you want to spend/use your  coins faster, downloading a "light" wallet and importing your private keys into there is an option. The easiest, most user-friendly one imo is Multibit (version 0.5.19 is the current build, MultibitHD has an additional 1k satoshi fee that goes to the developers, but is much more up to date with security and bugs.), and the developer (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=31622) is active on the forum and can assist you with questions if you post them over in the multibit section (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=99.0).
another light client i would recommend is electrum, although not as user friendly, it offers more features, such as the ability to set your tx fees and to act as cold storage.

edit: blockchain size: https://blockchain.info/charts/blocks-size

theres nothing here. message me if you want to put something here.

The total size is around ~50GB. SPV wallets only synchronize the headers which is relatively fast and doesn't occupy too much space. I would recommend Electrum, multibit for desktop. Some examples of web wallet is Blockchain.info(Not particularly safe) and greenaddress.it (Utilizes Multisig).

To spend the Bitcoins in the address, you would need the private key. It is important to not lose the private key the the process. Do always keep a backup of the wallet.dat by going to file>Backup wallet. Always remember the passphrase if you have set one.

What is the capacity of full database? 100gb?

The current database is about 45 GB.  It continues to grow by approximately 86 MB per day.

You'll have to export the private key of the addresses the bitcoins are in. If the coins are already in the address, then you can export the key even without having the blockchain downloaded.

you can use dumpprivkey command in the console of bitcoin core

That's a huge amount. Isn't that going to be a problem for people running nodes in lets say 2-3 years?

The most recent version of Bitcoin Core introduced pruning; as I understand it (not tried it yet) it's not - yet - fully developed, but will be in future versions. (I believe that means that nodes right now need the full dataset, but that'll change with the next version).

I wouldn't consider running 3 nodes from the same home machine much more beneficial than running one instead. Decentralization-wise, those nodes will be using the same IP. And in terms of efficiency, hard drive space wouldn't be the only issue since the nodes also suck up bandwidth to establish connections and transfer data. The idea of compressing/prunning block data has been around for quite some time though, we might see it being worked on in the not so distant future.
