how do free apps/games make money?

With ads or in-game purchases.

what type of ads pays more?

I don't know.

how is it calculated?

What do you mean ? The ads revenues ?

how does an apps/games get viral?

Simple and addictive concept.

what kind of marketing is it required?

Facebook is a good target for the type of game mentionned just above.

how to make your app/games listed on front page of stores (ios & android) ?

Become popular and then Apple and Google will contact you.

what kind of app/games is more demanding?

As stated before, simple and addictive games are the best. Also they need to be free.

I do not know the answer to all of the questions but I do know that most of these free apps are datamining the customers for info.
So when people sign up they sign a agreement by clicking yes and that gives access to all kinds of goodies.
They acess the persons call history, gps and allows them to sometimes contact you about services in the future.
Its really amazing how many people are willing to play "Angry birds" but do not check the agreement of service.

What's even more amazing is how many people read service agreements who don't play Angry Birds or the like. Ironically, it's that group which those who pen said service agreements wish to exploit because they tend to have more moneys in their pockets than those who don't or can't read.

Some free app developers  make money simply selling their apps to a biggest company.
